Hi all new guy looking for some advice.

Hi everybody. Im rob and im 19, I love my cars, have owned 7 fiestas, the most famous started life as a 1.1 van and was projected to 2.0 turbo and 4x4 status but salty air got the better of the shell and i couldn't find anything i wanted to start afresh with for the engine and running gear so it all went again, I currently drive a toyota celica GT (not 4) and its a bit too expensive to go playing with like i could with cheap fiestas so I am looking into building a locost.

I have not read the manual fully but have grasped what needs to be done for it and as i am a ford boy thorugh and through dont think i will have too much trouble but there are a few factors still hanging over it which are stopping me going and getting the materials for the chassis.
First is insurance, can i insure a kit car at my age?
Second is how crazy an idea is it to try and fit an escort/fiesta turbo hybrid engine with a cvh sierra gearbox?

1) have a ring round, Adrian flux is best for me but otheres use otheres n i'm sure they will recomend them.
2) Just do it, but the turbo bit will add to number 1.

I'm pretty sure i'm right in saying you can get insured on a kit car at any age from 17+. I'm 21 and have had a few quotes at car shows etc and nobody has said anything about me being too young. The best bit is i can get insured on a 2L Pinto'd car for £400 with no no-claims bonus whatsoever! (although I do have 4 years driving experience) As a comparison it would cost me about 4 times that amount to get myself insured on the donor sierra...

hi rob,
im 21, and last year, i called adrian flux for a quote on a 2l zetec se7en type car, with mileage limited to 3k, it came to £550 fully comp, with 4yrs experience, and no no-claims.
a quote on a 306 d turbo was £1400 in comparison.
i think the view they take is that as you have spent so much time and effort building your car, your going to drive it with respect, and any accidents you have you will fix yourself.

Bike engine insurance cheaper?

Is bike engined car insurance cheaper because its a lower powered engine? or do they realise its a crazy machine and charge you accordingly?

Insightful comment: the fact that you are 19 now + the fact that it takes 2 years to build a locost = you will be 21 when you need insurance for it = no problem!

Cheers,

Alex

i don't have actual insurance yet (liams post)

I've been trying to get virtual insurance for ages. I smashed my car up in 'Need for Speed' and would like to claim for the repairs.
You are 19 and have already got through more cars than our local scrapyard, do they fall apart that quickly round your area (Cornwall I presume). Remind me not to visit without protective clothing.

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

fiestas, well the first one met its end on its roof not long after my test (exeuberance of youth aye) second was a 1.1 5dr, done for a fill in but not very exciting, third was the 1.1 van, owned it for a while as a 1.1 van got bored and bought a 1.6 fiesta s to take the engine out of for the 1.1 van and used it for a little while whilst the 1.1 engine came out. had a white xr2i which had an engine fire. came to me a bit singed but only paid 50 quid so didn't mind. then got bored with the 1.6 in the van and decided to partake in the 2.0 turbo 4x4 project, had a 1.8 diesel fiesta for a run around from a "friend" but never got a log book or mot for it so demanded my money back and got an xr2i instead.

Then a few months after gettin the 2i i was offered a sierra cosworth cheap, got a loan and when i went to look at the car with the cash intent on buying it i found it was shagged. so had money but no car to spend it on so got a auto trader and spotted a bright yellow 93 (twin lamp shape) celica, it appealed, took it for a drive and got it.

And the van project ended because of salty cornish wether and it being a ford. not exactly renound for being rust proof.

Anyway got hold of adrian flux last nite and they quoted me 750 quid to insure a escort turbo lotus 7 style thing. 3k limited miles and third party but not bad considering it would cost me nearly twice that to insure an escy turbo.

oh mango, looked at the pics, lots of room then. running carbs on an ex engine is nice, the xr engines run a higher compression ratio compared to the other cvh engines, thanks to domed pistons.
