RV8 engine number

OK this is not for my locost build....
I built up a new rover V8 engine from bits when they were "on offer" at rpi - ended up with a shiney 4.6 with piper 285 cam & new heads etc for a touch over 2 grand & it's now happily pushing my mx5 around. The thing is I got a "short engine" and it doesn't have an engine number!!! (I just realised my V5 needs updating). Is this normal? do I just make one up & stamp it in? Am I looking in the wrong place (flat under dipstick hole)
cheers

Between #3 and #5

It would normally be stamped on a spot between cyl's #3 and #5 (near side of the block)....
Duuude, a 4.6 in an MX5! I want to see a picture, and how did you mate up the transmission....with all the RV8s I have I would love to do that too.....

David.

OR stamped on the back face of what would normally be the nearside block.

Sorry to hijack but you just got me thinking about SVA and registration and stuff.
Will be need written proof on the age of our engine?
If this is the case is it just a matter of writing to Rover and asking for a statement saying that out engine was manufactured in 1982?
Has anyone managed to do this?
