MX5 Cambelt
Does anyone know of any reasonably priced places in London/Surrey that will do a cambelt on the weekend?
I found a place in kent that is £170 all in but doesn't open on the weekend!

I had mine done at Tyre Web in Ashford, couldn't say for certain, but I used to live round the corner and I'm sure they used to open on a
saturday. linky.
Thats Ashford in Kent, so it might be too far but if it helps it's just off the M20 at either 9 or 10, I can never remember which is which.
I used to sort of know one of the blokes, and they sorted my MX5, I think alternator and belts cost about £200 including parts of the top of my head,
should be reasonable if they can get you in.
I didn't have the Cambelt done, but had all the other belts.

A couple of hours of your own labour and you've saved yourself £150.00
It's not complicated with the numerous step-by-step guides on the web.
It's a lot easier to do without the rad and roll bar in the way as well. So whip the rad out (4 bolts and 2 pipes) and loosen the clamps and
drop it down so you can get a bar - a BIG bar on the bottom crank bolt. Other than that it's all pretty easy.

Not a massively hard job, just make sure you take note of the timing marks, the cam pulleys will move!

you dont need to undo the big bolt,just the 4 ? smaller ones that hold the pulley on

bit of both really,i think there are 4,maybe 6 small bolts and you dont have to undo the big one

Depends if you're replacing the bottom pulley cause the 4 bolts are fubard, or replacing the oil seal, or woodruff key.
Lots of easy jobs can be done at the same time as the cambelt that are a pain in the ass otherwise.

It may be something that everybody does, I don't know. I am always scared that the cams will move after removing the cambelt. My way of locking
cams works for me.
Set the engine on TDC on No.1 cylinder
Remove the cam cover
Remove a cam bearing cap (one on each camshaft if DOHC)
Cut a small strip of paper and place between the bearing shell and the cam journal
Re fit bearing cap and tighten down.
Assuming the paper is thicker than the bearing clearance both cams will be locked.
Remove the belt and fit new (ensuring that the crank doesn't move)
Remove bearing caps and the bits of paper.
Hope this helps someone.

The MX5 cams are easy to lock. They've got 2 big hex profiles on them for a couple of molegrips/adjustable spanners. Plus everything's
already labelled so as long as you mark the teeth before you remove the belt, you can easily line them up.
