exhaust silencer cracking
my exhaust silencer has cracked where the tail pipe comes out of the silencer, i have a 4 into 1 manifold then with about 400mm straight pipe (where i
shall put a cat for the IVA) then a silencer and the mount to the chassis is on the end of the silencer...
the steel mount at the end of the silencer bolts to two 20x19mm rubber bobbins which bolt to the chassis.
i have got a stainless flexi somewhere which i will probably weld in before the straight pipe.
alot of people said i don't need a flexi.
has anyone else had this problem?
have i got the mount to the chassis in the right place?
should i have another chassis mount just before the silencer?
surely if i don't put a flexi in and just leave it how it is or add an additional chassis mount i am just putting the strain/stress somewhere
else?

I have a similar set-up, with no flexi and have had no problems. Before Cats, many older cars had no flexis either.
There's a fair bit of flexibility in the bobbins and the pipe anyway.
When you say the crack is where the tailpipe joins the silencer, do you mean as it leaves the silencer and that the bracket is on the tailpipe?
That's how mine is. I would have expected the most stressed areas to be towards the other end.

yeah thats what i mean i would post a picture but i have welded it up already you dont happen to have a picture of your bracket anywhere do you?

Very surprised to hear its failed around the exit side of the pipe, on mine this is the removal end, but the 'tail pipe' on only 6inchs
long, the other end flexes alarmingly starting, stopping, and on low idle (cold, no choke) and I expect it will fail eventually, but its done 3-4years
already.
