ECU controlled Alternator?
Can these be used without ECU control?
The 80amp one fitted to the Jag engine is small and light. For the output.
And it's free, which is nice

Not sure about Jap alternators but IIRC Ford alternators can be disconnected from the ECU to diagnose alternator faults , know of one on a Transit
thats been disconnected for about a year

They are ECU controlled for the application of sealed batteries with Cadmium (I think) at low temperatures and can be charged at eye watering rates
but for a very short time. The Ford ones default to ordinary charging rates when disconnected from ECU.

It would appear that you are correct
With the plug disconnected the alternator goes into "limp home" mode and charges at 13.5-14.0 volts. Good times!
