No Clutch

Dagnamit.

Just as I was planning a little Christmas drive, the drive deserts me.

I'm hoping it's the master cylinder, as the slave is an engine out job.

Happy Christmas

And a Merry Christmas to you all too.

The symptom is:- With a foot on the clutch pushing the stick towards 1st (or reverse) makes the car
want to creep forward (or back) without the gear being fully engaged. Is that termed clutch drag ?

Clutch plate & pressure plate are the proper ones for the engine and were bought new from Paul Matty Racing.

The concentric slave was second hand, but newish, and intended for a Mondeo.

The master was of unknown age from a scrap yard and I think a Leyland fitting. (Metal reservoir)
What made me use it god only knows, but I'll replace that first anyway.

I did wonder how to pass the time on Boxing day.

Try pumping the pedal fast then seeing if it's better?

May just need bleeding.

If the mc is to blame you should see some fluid leaking?

fluid level in reservoir hasnt dropped?

if yes....than master or slave leaking.

if not, try with bleeding first.

As others have suggested , try bleeding , it's likely to re occur though . Check the fluid in the master cylinder if it has any , if it's black or dirty then it's probably the rubbers deteriorating , if the level is low and the pushrods area is dry check at the bottom of the bell housing to perhaps confirm the slave . Best of luck , Mel

Just had a quick look.

Reservoir level half way down, so some loss.

From the footwell the pushrod looks wet and corroded.

From the engine bay there's a wet area at the rear of the m/c.

leaky mc
leaky mc

leaky mc. note wet patch

Thinking of eBay Item to replace the leaky one. (Or a 5/8" version)

Cheers & Merry Christmas

Note. The IVA missed the split pin that I didn't open up. Oops!

If the clutch was working ok before the new mc bore should match the old one. Did you match the old one to the Mondeo one when building?

I went for a drive yesterday and it was doing that! I just killed the engine at the lights to get first, was OK apart from that. Mines a cable though. Probably slipped.

Beware! Bourettes is binfectious.

I was thinking along those lines.

The Mondeo has a 3/4", but has a longer pedal in both length and travel.
I think that Leyland one fitted is 5/8" but I will check when I dismantle it.

As it is the pedal is short in travel and a little stiff. Real race car style.

Thanks for everyones help. Must go now as we're out to lunch and we've got to cook the bird and take it with us.
Every one else is a veggie so the wife and I and taking a guinea fowl and a brace of partridge. Just watch 'em dribble.

Cheers All

P.S.
What M/C should I use with a Mondeo slave in a Getrag box on a Lotus 907, was the first question I ever asked on LB.

Never got an answer.

Well to sort that question you have to work out the pedal ratio. If the distance from the pivot on the floor to the connection of the rod is the same as the Mondeo the standard sizes will work.

I'll take it out in the morning and measure, then follow your advice.

I quite like the short slightly stiff pedal, especially as the pedals are floor mounted.
A dab with the toes, just moving the ankle joint is all thats needed.

The first time I drove a car like this was a formula Ford single seater around Stetterton.
The clutch and brake were like trying to push on an RSJ

Hi All
Removed the M/C from the car and it is indeed 5/8" so now thinking of eBay Item to replace it.

Cheers
