Type 9 oil ?

What Oil for type 9 gear box I have been told dexron 3 is good to use
? Thanks

75/90 semi synthetic GL4 - as per the ford spec.
the guys at BGH recommend Comma stuff


Don't use dexron and don't use anything that says GL5 (any GL5 spec oil will kill type 9 boxes, including ones that say GL4&5)

Yep, Used the Comma GL4 Spec available from Halfrauds

GL5 apparent attacks the bushes or bearings, cant remeber which it was?

GL5 eats the yellow metal I believe

Because Ford specified ATF for the MT75 and people do not know the difference between a MT75 and a Type 9.

For a type 9 use Comma GL4 as stated above. Its all I have used for over 15 years in type 9's with no issues (other than a broken circlip and I don't think that was oil related). Prior to using Comma GL4 I used the red genuine Ford type 9 specific oil but it went off the shelves many years ago.

the MT75 is a totally different box with very different requirements, both were used in Sierra's and Granada's, both came in rwd and 4x4 versions, both were fitted to 4cly and V6 engines

there are 2 sure ways to tell them apart:
1 - The MT75 box has an all alloy case and normally an integral bellhousing, but the type 9 has an iron main case with a removable bellhousing.
2 - the gear pattern is different - reverse gear is beside 1st on a type 9, but behind 5th on an MT75


MT75's are normally found in later cars that have DOHC engines (8v or 16v), 2.9 V6's and the cossie 4x4's
Type 9's are found in cars with Pinto's, CVH's, the older 2.8 / 2.3 V6's and the diesels

No idea about ZF boxes but with regards to the Type E (or rocket as its sometimes called) the Ford specified oil was boggo standard EP, probably all there was available in the 70's.

The type 9 was in theory a Type E with a 5th on the end but Ford had issues with gear change quality (which they never had with a type E) and as a result introduced their own oil spec (the red one) which partially solved this. The nearest accepted replacement is the Comma GL4.

For me the simple fact is Ford never specified ATF for use in a Type E or Type 9 and therefore they should not be filled with it. Ford do tend to know a fair bit about their products and spend far more than your average pub know it all on R & D.

Exceptions to the above could be boxes fitted with aftermarket gear kits, always use what the manufacturer/builder recommends otherwise it could be the end of the warranty.

The type 9 may be a bit fussy about it's oil - but the bonus is that best stuff for the job is pretty cheap and easy to get so why risk anything else

That is probably an American spec for American Fords and will very possibly kill a Type 9. Its fully synthetic for starters and the last thing a type 9 needs is fully synthetic, the syncros will stop working.

Why will people not accept that the correct oil for a Type 9 is good old cheap GL4 semi synthetic Comma.

I have heard of many people using that particular oil but the fact its fully synth when Fords spec was for semi synth has put me off.

Ford type 9 syncros do not work properly if the oil is too good which I understand was Fords original reason for specifying semi synthetic.

That and the price and no local stockists.
