TYPE 9 GEARBOX BELLHOUSING LENGTH
Hi, can anyone help me out with preferably the length of a Type 9 bellhousing, or alternatively a Type N bellhousing?
The Type 3 in my Hornet Mk 2 finally succumbed to 5 years of 2 litre Zetec abuse in the Heritage Relay at Snetterton earlier in the month, so the time
has come to fit a Type 9, but I will need to retain the Type 3 alloy bellhousing I currently have and either fit a spacer between the gearbox and the
bellhousing, or machine the input shaft to suit, depending on the difference in bellhousing lengths.

Check input shaft spline count and diameter
I’m sure Type 9 has more splines and bigger diameter

the type 3 has a 7/8” shaft with 20 splines (same as the type 2 and the 2000E)
the type 9 has a 1" shaft with 23 splines (same as the type 5, E, F as well as the T5, MT75 and the fwd MTX75 etc...)

Thanks for the extra info, the clutch plate I used with the Type 3 was an Escort Twin Cam one, but with a Pinto cover. Thankfully I have a spare
Pinto clutch plate from the clutch kit that will fit nicely.
Its a similar issue at the other end of the box as the output shaft is also larger, so the propshaft will need modifying.
The Type 3 was one of the later ones with the 5/8" longer input shaft. I still need to get the box out to make more accurate measurements, but
it looks as though there is only approx 5mm difference between the 4 cylinder Type 9 bellhousing and the shorter Type 3 lengths, so should be able to
re-use the existing bellhousing possibly with a spacer between the box and bellhousing or preferably machine the input shaft to suit.
