2005 r1 info?

anyone had any experience with one?

been offered one, just wanted to get the lowdown on whats different about them before i made any decisions.

by all accounts i'd need a new custom 'racing' loom to bypass the ignition security?
anything else? pros/cons?

any info appreciated

they are a lot peakier than the earlier injected ones....apparently nothing much happens under 8000rpm then the world goes nuts....
so unless your going to be thrashing the nuts off it all the time, your better sticking with the 02/03 injected one....

Have a browse through the DSR Forums as some of the racers there have used the 04/05 engine, but as Colin says it is a lot peakier than the earlier engine, less power/torque than the 02/03 engine under 8k, but revs to 13.5k or something silly and produces 20bhp more peak power

ahh. not keen on the idea of a gutless bottom end so maybe i'll stick to the older ones. I was intrigued as the new ones (04/05) are only a small bit more expensive than the old ones.. which have become like rocking horse doo-dah..

Thinking of using one myself now..want more torque...

I've been offered a busa but can't afford to drop that in my own car..

note to myself....

must sell more engines...must find more F.I R1's....

fancy a busa....It's only £3K !

Nah its generally a more revvy engine, shorter stroke and bigger pistons I think which usually has the effect of losing mid range torque but gaining top end. Im sure you could gain some back by tuning with a Power Commander etc, but you can probably gain the ame again with the 02/03 engine, so the gap would be the same.

Having said all that I wouldnt mind betting that under 8k the new R1 is still more pokey than a carbed blade, so it certainly wouldnt be slow in the mid range, and would go ballistic at higher revs.

I would double check the motor dimensions.

I believe they are the same from '98 to '03, but I think '04 motor may vary.

I stand to be corrected, could someone in the know confirm this ?

yes your right...the mountings are different, because it is a more angled engine it might even be a bit harder to fit in a seven...it is small though so I could also be talking poo....

The 98-03 R1 engine is a lot more upright than most, and with the vertically stacked gearbox its a fair bit narrower overall, so I reckon an 04 would still be well within the bounds of regular BEC friendly dimensions.
My blade engine used to almost sit on the near side chassis rail at the front, with the prop over towards the offside about 30mm inboard from the tunnel on the drivers side. The R1 is about 40mm away from the nearside chassis rail yet still the prop is straighter than it was on the blade, so it shows how much narrower the 98-03 engine is compared even to a relatively small blade engine.
