Alternator

Hi

Ive seen topics like this posted around the forum but none of them seemed to answer my question exactally.

Am having loads of problems with the alternator getting one that fits in the gap and has the right pully on it. The zetec one that was with the engine is too big so got hold of a smaller one, not sure off of what. However this has the wrong pully on it. Tried to get the pully to fit with a spacer etc but its casuing alot of trouble. Does anyone know of somewhere that supplies small alternators with the right pully on them or if there are other alternators out there that could be sutible. Its going on a 1800 zetec in a luego velocity on the exhaust side. Any help would be great as this is holding up the build. Thanks. Rich.

Rich,

Your best bet is a Daihatsu Charade alternator.

I'm having the same problem at the moment

I had a Micra alternator didnt fit - be happy to help ya out - as attempting mine this weekend

ah right. Maybe ill have to make the one i have work. Just need to get the pully to fit as the smaller alternator has a smaller shaft on it.

just swap the end and make a 'spacer' so it runs true.

I put the Ford end on the Daihatsu Charade alternator.

My Micra alternator only didnt fit because of Throttle Bodies - if you're going carbs - my recommendation is MICRA alternator (any from 91 on) and a £30ish quid bracket from MAC#1

Ive got throttle bodies which seem to take up alot of room so am planning on it going on the exhasut side. Need to get on with this, its starting to hold up the build!

Dunnell engines do a bolt on kit. Thats alternator, mounts, tensioner and belt.

I have made my own in the past using a renault 5 alternator and the pully from the dohc sierra on custom brackets. I can dig out what belt you need aswell if needed.

Richwalker,

You want the Daihatsu then m8 - keep it on the same side as it is now...

Just have the bottom bracket extending further than the top bracket - the only way to get tension - very much like Big Waza's.

Its amazing how you can soon run out of room!

I cant go on the other side as i have an exhaust there - it comes out of the aluminium rather than the bonnet

I would advise against sticking it under the exhaust. These alternators dont last long at high rpm as it is, getting it hot will shorten its life span more still.

The above kit from Dunnel is compact and sits under my 45's a treat. Your Tb's should be smaller.

Here's big Waza's alternator set-up.

Did you go with this in the end?

That bottom bracket looks good!

Na I had a few quid and was wooed into the Dunnel item.

The car itself is all locost, ive made most of it, even the wishbone brackets but the engine is a different matter

I did a nice job of finishing the other and should have kept it, but im like that

Mark,

depends on how you mount the engine on a Zetec. As the main mounting point is where you have put your alternator. So putting it above this and the water pump puts it under the manifold.

You could go below ?
