mt75 or type5

I've found a supplier on my side of the pond that can get me a MT75 tranny, he can also get me a belhousing for the borg warner t5 from a cosworth sapphire.
now the t5 are readily avaliable here, but not the bellhousing, the mt75 does not exist here, other than from a few cosworth specialists.

is the T5 the better choice, or is the mt75 worth the reduced foot room?

this is being bolted to a 2.0l zetec and fit in a +4 chassis

I'm no expert but I believe the t5 would be the stronger of two and will have more choices when it comes to gear sets (if you are into racing?) although for a standard 2.0 zetec and mostly road use the MT75 would be a perfectly good choice.
So it would depend on cost and what I was using it for if I had to choose between them.

OK, is the difference in size going to effect cabin space that much?

For a North American build, I would not recommend the MT75, as they are basically non-existant here.

The Type 9 is very compact gearbox that is acceptable for a stock Zetec, but you would want to get an uprated version if you are running much more power. I got mine from BGH Geartech in the UK, but these are NOT cheap. I made this choice as I am expecting to start at about 180bhp, and the stock box is not up to that (at least not for long). The HD unit I purchased is rated at 260bhp/220 lbs/ft of torque.

Type 9s can be found quite easily here as they were used in the Merkur XR4Ti (Ford Sierra), but there are some issues to watch for:

1. Depending upon the bellhousing you choose, you may have to shorten the input shaft.

2. These gearboxes are very stressed when used in the heavy Merkur with 175hp. Most of them will need attention.

3. Although the North American cars came with the "close ratio" gearbox (3.36:1 first gear), you will likely still find that first gear is too low for practical use in a Sevenesque. This will be more or less pronounced, depending upon what you are using for a diff. My BGH box uses a 2.76 first gear.

4. For some reason, the gearshift mechanism seems different on the North American box. I bought a Westfield gearchange extension (did not end of using it), but it would not fit on place on the selector rail as it was too small. This may have been a manufacturing issue on the Westfield part, but it is something to consider.

I chose the Type 9 as I am building a book-sized frame, and the footbox space was VERY important to me. That said, if I had been building a +4, I would very likely have gone with a T5. These are incredibly strong (originally from V8 Mustangs), plentiful and cheap. Better yet, they came in just about everything (Mustangs, Cameros, S10s, etc., etc., etc., so there are plenty of different tailshaft lengths and configurations to choose from.

Bellhousings for the T5 are no problem. You can find them at:

They do cost about $450.00, though.

If it helps, I have the MT75 box fitted in a +4 chassis (well 442 so a little less room in the footwell than a full +4) and seem to have plenty useable space there.
I'm not sure how much bigger (if any) the t5 box is over the MT75 though, but if a similar size you should have no worries about available space.
