Coughing, Splutering and Farting

No not me, the car!

Had my 2.0L Pinto with twin 45's rolling road tuned in Oct/Nov last year. Done about 600 miles since so not allot. Went to the show at Detling yesterday and it seemed to be coughing, farting and popping from the exhaust allot more than it ever has in the past.

Mainly when you are in say 5th doing 70mph then come off the throttle to slow down but keeping it in 5th. I know that a little farting is OK.

What is the problem? Is it partly to do with the rise in temp?

Cheers
D

On the over-run some unburnt fuel gets through into the exhaust. It can then sometimes ignite if you have a small leak in the exhaust system somewhere, usually close to the headers.
Woth checking all the joints anyway

Raz

It was indeed - loads of ladies seemed to like it for some reason. I must have been in touch with my femenine side when I built it.

I have had this problem and it is exactly as Raz says - unburnt fuel in the exhaust.

People in cars following would complain about the petrol smell

A little more ignition advance had my car running better, the petrol smell went and so did the banging, popping and farting

Cheers

If you are running an ecu then you can simply reduce the fuel when the throttle is closed but running carbs and a dizzy isn't so easy. I am not sure that advancing the ignition is such a good idea but it is probably worth checking that you have set it correctly according to the manual.
A mixture check might also be in order if people following you are smelling petrol.

I think you are mistaken, it looks like it cost a fortune, possibly a supercar, thats why women like it: they think the owners minted
