Pinto Engine Stamp
I have a third hand pinto Engine. It's a 2.0 205 Block. According to June Which Kit I should be able to tell if it's High or Low
Compression from the Engine Stamp Number. Mine begins with HK which is not listed on the 'handy' table'. Also in the Which Kit MK
build Dr Watson suggests that if the head begins with P then it can run on unleaded. What I want to know..is my engine High Compression and would it
be problem if it wasn't....and..as my head cast number is P8 can it run on unleaded. The Engine is from a 'D' Reg if that's
any help. On the whole the Engine looks good. I think the Cam shaft has been replaced recently, The Spray bar looks new and the gasket very fresh.
...but then what do I know??

The code you are after is not the usual 'Engine Number' stamp, but a three (?) character code stamped on the gearbox mounting flange (took
me ages to find mine, I didn't know exactly where it should be and it was covered in grime!):
A comprehensive table of what this code means can be found here:
http://home.att.net/~CapriClubChicago/engcode.htm
Ignore the first table, it's the second two tables we are interested in.
It's only the first two characters that are important.
HTH,
Matt.

Thanks All, I had the V55 so knew the age. Turns out it's a high performance, twin carb model....lovely.
Any body have any thoughts on the unleaded issue??

Code NR or N4 on the flange Matt's pointer goes to indicates the engine was originaly built for injection 2L, NE for carbed 2L. There is a
separate code stamped on the head, either on the inlet or exhaust manifold gasket face, gearbox end. L, P, PP, R, or RR indicate the head is OK for
unleaded. Injection heads with the pear shaped inlets are all OK for unleaded.

Thanks Dusty. I have a P.
So does that mean my Head is OK for Unleaded...without any modifications or special fuel additives? Thanks for you help.

Superb, I'll paint it then and whack it in. Might treat it to some Super Unleaded...
Thanks All.
