Baby atlas axle?

Just brought what I think is a baby atlas axle, its 48" wide the guy said its of a Spanish mk2 escort.
If it is a baby atlas I was under the impression that they were as rare as rocking horse sh*t !!!! I paid £67 for it of ebay so have I brought a bargan?

Can anybody confirm that's what I've got?

The plan is to replace my English axle with the atlas with the 3.09 ratio from Capri fitted, does anybody know if the diff housing is the same as the Capri atlas? Will the 3.09 ratio crown wheel and pinion fit?

Cheers in advance Dave..............

Hi Dave,
The bolt on cover at the rear indicates it is a Salisbury axle, and the handbrake linkage looks very Escort, so if it is the same width as your Timken axle then yes it's a baby atlas.
I don't know how rare they are, but I have seen a few about. Definitely rarer than the Timken.
Ratio's when fitted to Mk2 Escort were 4.11,4.44 and 3.89 according to Haynes.

Can't help with Capri compatibility.

See you tomorrow.

David

Went and fetched it from Basildon today 200miles round trip.
But as it is a baby I'm well happy will save me a lot of hassle shortening a Capri axle.

Its 3.89 ratio in it I've got a 3.09 Capri diff coming next week I'm just hoping it will fit!

If its a European Escort axle then it will be a Koln axle, looks like an Atlas but it isn't. Parts are impossible to get and its no stronger than the English axle. Your Capri diff will not fit.

Have you got a picture of the front of the diff. The Salisbury has a distinctive nose. Passenger side of nose should have a drain plug.

You can tell its a Koln as the backplate studs are not evenly spaced, the top and bottom ones are offset, on the Atlas they are equally spaced.

I think Gazza285 is right. Salisbury doesn't have that lump of excess metal on the top of the nose, and the sides of the back cover has convex cut outs. Filler and breather are in the right place.

I'll bring my diagram with me tomorrow. We'll all let you buy us a drink to help drown your sorrows.

Perhaps that's why it was £67?

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, £67 not too bad, but a 200 mile trip as well.

I would love to buy you all a round! But after driving 200miles to buy an expensive door stop I'm not going to now!

P.s just going into the garage to take a 9" grinder to it! Should make me feel better seeing it suffer

The cover plate on an atlas is round isn't it ?, that one has straight sides

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.
