2.0l Pinto ignition
Hi all, Im a bit of a newbie so please bare with me.
I have been bitten by the locost building bug and Ive started by acquiring a Sierra donor car and have stripped it down of all the donor parts I
believe I require for an MK Indy. Now the tricky thing is, the 2.0l pinto engine I have is uses electronic timing on carbs, and I was wondering if
this is possible (easy) to run in a 7, or whether it would be better to switch these out for some other carbs and a distributor. Also Ive heard talk
about bike carbs and TPS (dunno what that is) and wondered on how viable that is, remembering im building a LOCOST
All help is greatly appreciated.

If you want to keep the costs down, I would stick with what you have. No problem with what you have as it's a carb engine, it will fit in the
indy (the injection models don't!). You can always upgrade latter...

I junked all the Ford gear off my engine (it's a zetec) and fitted bike carbs from a ZX9R that has a TPS. (Throttle Postion Sensor)
I made my own inlet manifold and bought a Megajolt system for the ignition. Total cost for me was £140. £40 for the carbs and £100ish for Megajolt.
To run that lot on a Pinto you will also need the VR sensor, Edis module and coil pack and HT leads from a zetec engined car. Not as daunting as it
sounds, loads of them in scrapyards, or ebay, just make sure you get all the bits with all the plugs and plenty of associated wiring. To get the whole
lot working a tooth disc on the front pulley for the VR sensor.
Then a laptop to set it all up, or, like me a pc next to the car in the garage.
Google megajolt and you will get all the info you need.
This website has the setup for a 2L PInto with webers but will be the same for bike carbs.

Thanks for the responses. I think what I'll do for now is get the pinto running in the car first, then I'll upgrade at a later date. The
only problem I have now is that I dont have the wiring loom from the original donor car, are these easy to come by ?

Do you have the plug of the original donor ignition amp? If so its quite easy to wire up. The early sierra electronic set up is the one to have (dizzy
has a plug on end of wire - later ones have the plug as part of the dizzy body and is no good). If you have the dizzy, coil and amp it will be good
(if you do a search under my user name you will see a pic in my recent for sale add with everything you need, mine is still for sale as well).
If you are unsure post a pic of what you have and help will be forthcoming.
Ref carbs, your current should get you SVA'd for now. Later you can mod to your hearts content. Bike carbs with current ignition, or switch
ignition to modified dizzy or even megajolt if you fancy. Then there is the throttle body injection route. All is possible but i guess no point in
worrying about these just yet if you are sticking to a build budget.

save yourself a lot of hassle and buy a sierra based "premier wiring loom" easy to follow instructions.

Looks, IIRC like an Motorcraft ESC (II or IV?) system. I have one as a spare too.
It uses an electronic distributor mounted mid way up the front left above the fuel pump.
Providing you can get the engine going it would plop in an Indy (I'm doing it myself).

Yer I think its an ESC II, does the wiring loom from premier include a connection for this kind of box and the relevent connections to the engine
sensors etc. Also would I need the 4 part or 2 part wiring loom , what is the difference apart from the price ?

Oh heck, different to mine. Is that a hall effect set up? I ouldnt suss out how to do it on mine so replaced with inductive.
I also fitted a 38DGAS carb on mine (soon to be for sale). No electrics on that and a known performance upgrade before going weber or bike carb route.

Anyone else any ideas if the kit I have will work, looks like its an ESC II, but where would I get a compatible wiring loom from.

None of the aftermarket looms come with specialist connectors for ECUs or sensors as far as I know. They are basically big bundles of wires with some
fuses and relays, plus they usually splice on your existing steering column switch connectors if you provide them.
The only place you'll find a connector for your ECU is a scrap yard or ebay.

Same system as mine but mine is based on a nearly new 4K miles dizzy (i bought it new) http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/viewthread.php?tid=71239
That ebay set up was well cheap. I sold similar unknown miles one for £50 earlier in the year.

If you look at the first picture I listed the other day it shows the cable with the plug on it to go into the ECU, however if you are saying the setup
you are selling will literally drop onto my engine , then I maybe interested.
