Although I have read that the Mk5 GTI has regained some of the magic.

Nooooo, the mk3 is where it all went lardy and wrong, mk2 is just a bit of a manly bulking up, stronger and better, filling out in it's teenage
years
This is my last beastie She's dead now, but bits of her will

I loved my Mk1. I did a lot of work to it (was a wreck when i got it). BMW dash (never again! nightmare to get it all working), 16V engine, rear discs
(waste of time imho), Merc Cosworth interior (looked fantastic), single wiper etc etc. i spent loads and got next to nothing back for it when i sold
it on. loved it all the same.

Ok guys, confession time - I'm the saddo who said my W reg MK1 was "the best car I've driven" on The Cars' the Star -
that was my 10 seconds of fame.
Actually it was/is true - for an 8 valve 1600cc engine it really flew - even took the back seat out and used it as a high speed delivery van when I
worked in the rag trade.
Bought it from a mate who worked at a VW company for £5k new then sold it 2 years and 76k later for £3.5k.
Cheers, Pewe
