How much are machine shop costs?
How much would a machine shop charge me to have some largeish steel parts turned?
I'm fairly serious about building a modern day Peel Trident type car. I've found that there are no Kart drum brakes for sale in the UK
and that the ones you can buy from the US won't quite fit inside 5" kart wheels. But, if I had one half of a pair of split rim halves
turned up I could have the 5" seat diameter and a 4.5" ID for the drum brake shoes all in one piece.
The finished parts would be 6" in diameter and aabout 2.25" wide. What would might a machine shop charge for turning 4 of these wheel
halves?
Also, what kind of steel would be good?

If you're thinking of using kart wheels don't forget you need e-marked road tyres.

might save you some time if you have a chat to this chap...

Good to see I'm not the only one nutty enough to think they are a cracking idea
ETA - might also be worth considering small tractor mower wheels and parts, as per the ones the council drive around on the roads, or small road
sweepers even.

If you had the brake drums as part of the wheel structure, would that not be a good idea, ie the heat expadning the air in the tyre and altering the
pressure, and the temperature of the tyre rubber etc etc.
Just thinking aloud..
1. The point of a journey is not to arrive.
2. Never take life seriously. Nobody gets out alive anyway.

I believe drum brakes are normally cast iron, I know there are a lot of issues to do with heat, expansion, contraction, cracks etc

Kart drums are thin walled and plated. The look like they're drawn from sheet and then have the brake face machined onto them. The don't
look like car drums at all.
Am I right in thinking that a machine shop will simply charge by the hour or does it not work like that?
How long might it take to turn a piece of round steel (or aluminium if a HAVE to have separate drums) into a half-wheel-shaped dish?
