do i go bec?
hi there
i am at the moment building an mk indy with an ford dohc which i ve just fitted in but not wired up,but now im considering putting an bike engine
in?
so i ve a few questions.
1. is it worth the effort?
2. what type of bike engine do you recommend?
3. would i need to change alot on what ive put on the chassis allready ie diff,drive shaft etc?
4. and lastly do the the bike engines need modifying alot or is it a case of slip it straight in ?
any comments would be welcome thanks guys

Have you fitted the gearbox yet? If it's an MT75 then the chassis will probably need altering. I would ditch the ford DOHC engine, my donor
sierra came with one but I went with a pinto in the end as the MK was made for it/more tuning options. I'd go BEC over DOHC. Diff and
driveshafts would stay the same.

hi nope its type 9 i wish i did go for pinto as well but the bec seems an good optioncheers

Most of the car stays the same with a BEC conversion. If you've specified boat anchor front springs you might need to go for some lighter
ones... Driveshafts etc can stay the same. Diff might be able to stay the same though you might find your gearing a bit wonky.
Else just plop in a R1 unmodified and have some high reving fun

Definately worth it IMHO, but get a ride in someones car to make your mind up. BEC's are very fast, but very frantic and hooligan like (which,
to me is perfect!).
R1 and fireblade engines are popular and readily available, bigger engines such as ZX12 ad Hyabusa's are moe expensive. Get in touch with Malc
at Yorkshire Engines - always been good to me.
You can keep your diff, but depending on the ratio, you may change it later. LSD would be good too.
You'll need to mod the prop, but best option is to get a TRT custom made - not overly pricey and definately worth it in the end.
As for modifying the bike engine, not much needed really:
1. Air Filter
2. Carb Jets or Power Commander if FI
3. Sump baffle
4. Engine Cradle
5. Sprocket adapter
If you get a kit from Malc, it should come with a full loom, so you ust eed to extend out the lights and splice in the additional circuits (hazards
etc.). Fairly simple stuff.
The gearbox can be used with a normal tunnel mounted shifer, but lots (most?) of people go for a paddle shift (get in touch with athfinder for a great
bit of kit at a very good price).

If you are building a track day / occasional ride out car then BEC is probably OK. If you want to do longer distances, go touring , drive in town CEC
is the way to go.
If you already have the DOHC in I would finish the build get SVA and think about BEC as an upgrade in a year or so, you willneed to do a fair bit of
work and lay out a lot of dosh to go BEC particularly if you want a reverse gear so think carefully !

God gave you arms and legs so you wouldn't have to spend a fortune on a reverse gearbox for your BEC

Get a zetec engine in it and 160 bhp shouldn't be too far away. Much cheaper than converting to BEC.

In the short term yes - but it sounds like the bug is already in, so changing later will cost even more. Go BEC now and save yourself some cash...

What are your expectations? If gut wrenching mini f1 type performance than go bec. Im warming to it but no way near the pocket money to do.
All i can say is decide early - build once

Dont rule out the pinto as it supprised me with the performance. Flak monkey's (david) GTS has a pinto with webbers in it and its happy to
cruise around in 5th then drop it down a few gears then all hell brakes loose!!!!!
BEC's are for the real nutcases who love 110000 RPM!!!

as others have said, don't rule out the pinto, there is loads of tuning stuff available.
i had an engine built by Vulcan. a 2.1 pinto putting out 160 bhp approx with loads of torque. it is the fastest thing i have
driven
the engine was also lightened and balanced and was noticably lighter than the standard engine
you can tootle around in 5th or thrash it and get loads of wheel spin
i have briefly toyed with the idea a BEC but then i get in the old car with the boat anchor and give it a thrash and the idea goes
i drive too fast and really like to rev cars and if i had a BEC i would loose my licence in minutes so it's CEC for me oops could
still loose my licence so i will have to slow down NAH!!!!!!

you have gave me loads to think about now ahhhhhhhhh,
i think i will have to ge rid off the dohc though even after all the bruised knuckles getting in place

I recommend the 04/05 R1 - Good power, good torques and failry bullet proof - be sure to fit a sump baffle plate.
