Bad day
All was going well,I am well into my engine swap.sorted out the final bits of plumbing today, then thought I would start the engine get it upto temp
and check for leaks,Engine was running for about 5 mins there was a slight tapping as before, then sounded like someone dropped some spanners in my cam
cover.Sounds terminal, this is only the third time the engine has run since being rebuilt.Unfortunetly the guy who built it (Gerald Dale motorsport)
isnt back from his hols untill Tuesday.I have removed the cam cover (no spanners) but did find a small bit of metal about 10mmX5mm x1mm thick slightly
curved.Looks like it could be a piece of the skirt of one of the hydraulic followers. But I also noticed No.3 spark plug was wet with oil.I am
reluctant to strip it down any further untill I can speak to Gerald.Hope he is going to be one of the good guys,I bought the engine over 5mths ago.I
thought I would get it back on the road after a long weekend of spannering.Looks like I will be stuck in doors over the Easter break now, think the
outlaws are coming as well.

Bugger bugger bugger.....
Sorry to hear that Dave, and it all looked so neat and tidy, ready to go when we popped over at the weekend..
Hope it works out OK, you could do with some luck after this and the manifold trouble... if theres anything I can do, let me know.

That's pretty tough 'specially as it means you wont have the chance to scare the whotsits off the mother-in-law!
Shouldn't make any difference how long ago it was re-built if it hasn't been run (other than keeping it oiled) in the meantime.
I'd be inclined to take some pics of the offending item then put the lid back on and ask him what he is going to do about it (nicely to start
with) when he gets back.
Presumably he re-built the engine fully or was it a partial re-build? If full then he really should have checked it all over.
Are the edges of the broken metal all one colour or is part of it dis-coloured (showing evidence of previous crack)?

Is this Gerald Dale in Battle, Sussex? If so could you tell me his response as I was thinking of getting some work done by him.

Yes thats the guy,I have spoken to him a few times in the past and he seems O.K.But from experience that dosnt mean anything.I will let you know how I
get on.
I am really worried it has done some serious damage and knackered the head or something.I cannot see the guy wanting to replace a ported and gas
flowed coscast head in a hurry.
heres a photo of the bit of metal I found under the cam cover
