Petition Number 10...

OK, you may think this is not car related, but this is exceptionally relevant to anyone who uses motor racing circuits

I signed it but I think its a waste of time, the government don't listen.

I signed one of these before to save my local hospital and got a reply a few weeks back saying that due to the volume of signatures they were going to reconsider the plan. Last night I discovered they are closing it anyway. London has new flats put up every single day, the place is fit for bursting yet they are closing the hospitals to, get this, improve our service! Rant over, sorry for the hijack.

In the vast majority of cases these petitions don't alter policy (mainly because they're badly thought out). However there was one about the proposed changes to the highway code a year or so ago and with the petition and lobbying the changes were dropped/modified so they do have an effect sometimes.

I propose an petition that people should "KEEP UP AT THEE BACK" though.

I agree that these things don't carry a great deal of weight - it's not like a referendum. But it does give people an opportunity to voice their feelings, andthen judge the Governments response to specific. This then contibutes toward enabling you and I the voters (you do vote, right?) to make a thought through decision at the next election.

I think it's also fair to say that strong public opinion does not directly affect teh government's stance, but it does affect the opposition if on ly as a vote winner. This in turn puts the thumb screws on who ever is in power.

Fair enough petition. We've had no end of problems round my neck of the wood. Since the 50s there have been summertime openair concerts in Kenwood. Unfortunately people bought big houses next to Kenwood and decided to try and stop everyone having fun so for the last two years they've been challenging every planning application for the concerts.
Amusingly though, the people who organised the summer concerts e-mailed anyone who had ever bought a concert ticket and asked them to support the proposed license application (this year the little gits decided to challenge the application for the lighting stage not because they can see it, just that it's a necessary part of the concerts)... The local council website crashed due to the number of people supporting the application!! In fact this morning I got 10 letters from the council (depiste the fact I only wrote once) explaining they'd granted permission (even though the concerts ended two weeks ago!!!)....

It racks me off that people are so selfish.... If they don't like the thought of an open air concert going on next to their house they should buy a different house. FFS!!!!!

Although I don't support a lynch mob mentality I would at the very least support an entire concerts audience deciding to walk home through the middle of these people's houses (in the back door, out the front, maybe stop for a wee in the kitchen sink)....
