Sierra Steering Shaft Triangle End Dimensions?
Doug68 - 1/7/10 at 03:23 AM

I've bought one of the Escort to Sierra UJ's from Rally Design:

Two thing surprised me about it:

1. The size of the triangle that gets clamped is quite small, I'd imagined it to be bigger.
2. One side of the clamped (Sierra) end is riveted on so the triangle will need to be the correct size to get a good clamp happening with the joint.

So as Sierras are non-existent in Australia, could someone post a photo of the triangle end of the Sierra shaft and the dimensions of it?

Thanks,

are you actualy going to use a sierra column ?

No I'm not using a Sierra column, I have a MkII Escort rack and a Mazda steering column.

In the middle I need an intermediate shaft, here in Australia it creates issues for me if I weld together that intermediate shaft.

So if I can use a UJ with a simply fab'd end like the Sierra joint its much better for me, I can probably find an existing intermediate shaft off of a production vehicle that has the correct spline on the other end.

I have one of those, I bashed out the rivet and then put a bolt through both sides, you are quite right its not a great fit.

It doesn't easily fit the Sierra shaft without removing the rivet and bolting.

what size spline is on the Mazda column ?

I would be careful doing that, as the shaft will now be rotating offset, o.k I suppose if the other end of the triangle section is a UJ/Rubber coupling but if it's fixed with a bearing (i.e. stearing column) then it will bend the shaft on each rotation (might not matter depends how much off center it ends up..) and load up the bearings (and maybe binding a bit)..

The best measurements i can get are as follows :

long edge of triangle : 17.5 - 17.65 mm

point to mid of opposite face : 15.68 -15.9 mm

Excellent, thanks very much!
