Shock absorber mounting
Dangerstevie - 19/1/14 at 05:03 PM

Afternoon all, I am looking at using cbr1100xx rear shock absorbers on my mini as I have a few of them knocking about. What I am unsure on is will the shock be ok mounted on its side? I plan on using a pushrod & bell crank to actuate the shock but if it's no good on its side then I need to re-think the setup.

I used Honda Goldwing shoxs, new but old stock on my locost

lasted about 100 miles, before they both leaked, and about another 50 miles before one broke the bottom mount clean off

I would not put them on a car

Haha grammar police...

We used bike shocks on a few race cars at uni with good results but they were conventially mounted not inboard and not horizontal. I am certain that these shocks are up to the job as they have hefty mounts and are a good quality shock but I don't know if they will damp correctly when mounted horizontally.

The OE CBR XX shock will work fine on it's side. They run a floating piston to keep the gas/oil seperate. They do however have some hefty springs/damping so you'll need to get your ratios right.

Good luck,

Mike
