Snap-Off Boss
daveb666 - 7/11/14 at 11:08 AM

I want to fit a pop-off boss to my car to increase security.

Is there anything I should be aware of before buying these? Pitfalls / risk of them falling apart and me crashing etc?

They seem fairly reasonably priced but I'm not really sure what I'm looking for.

There can be pit falls with these but normally fall into two area's

1. Operator error - in your haste to drive off you do not lock / clip it on properly and the wheel comes off in your hand at the wrong momment. When you attach you wheel check it is secure before moving.

2. Buying a cheap un-branded device, they may look nice and work perfectly to start with but the mechanisim holding the wheel on over time wears unknown to you until the wheel falls off at the wrong momment.

You don'y need the most exspensive thing out there but buy a brand that is proven and double check its clipped in properly before driving off.

No personal experience but some-one on here found out you have to ensure it's properly attached EVERY time after his detached causing him to attack the central crash barrier at speed!
IIRC he was OK but the car was very second-hand.
Just a thought - you might want to check your insurance company has no issues with a detachable wheel.

I always thought it was a very poor choice of brand name.

You really wouldn't want your steering wheel to SNAP OFF !!
