aluminium thickness for flared side panels
jabbahutt - 12/9/11 at 12:54 PM

Afternoon all

Checked some threads on this subject but failed to find the thickness of the metal used. So could someone who has made flared side panels for their car please confirm what thickness aluminium you used please (in mm if possible I'm baffled by swg etc)

Many thanks
Nigel

I used 1.2mm

It's not load bearing so 1mm should be fine. You could always fold any unsupported open edges to increase strength.

just in case

20 gauge = 0.9mm and 18 gauge about 1.2, 16 gauge is closer to 1.6 and therefore easy to remember

16 gauge. but use a swager

Mine are 1.2mm also. I have no worries re strength, but I'm half expecting them to require sound proofing to deal with noisy vibrations.

Any chance of some photos of these flared side panels and how you have done it?

Nigel, if you can put a bit of shape into the panel ie some curvature, it will make it very stiff and you can use 1mm thick material without any problems with vibration. Once you've put the shape in, a safe edge can be turned over.

I asked a similar question a week or so ago (you probably saw my thread). I bought two 1mm thick ali sheets, they arrived today. Got them from eBay, here:

aluminium sheet plate 1000mm x 750mm x 1mm | eBay
