Help - Ford Mondeo Mk3 Bonnet Catch
stevegough - 20/4/17 at 05:27 PM

Its a few years since I've been on LCB....!

But, just asking if anyone has any idea about a fix for a bonnet catch that has stopped working?

It is one of those with the key... insert key, turn to the left and the catch releases.
Then turn to the right it should release the safety catch - but it doesn't.

Any contributions from the knowledgeable LCB brains would be gratefully received!!!

Thanks!

Had a the exact same problem on my Transit Connect. The key was worn and wouldn't do anything at all at the bonnet, the spare key worked perfectly. (I just had to ransack the house to find it.).

Hope that helps. . . . . .

now is the time to make a duplicate of that spare key, before it wears at all

Had the same problem on a Transit a few weeks ago , by chance a locksmith we use turned up and opened it in 20 seconds using a tool available from Amazon for less than twenty quid . Google Transit master key tool , it should work on Mondeo's

Thanks very much, Slingshot and Mel... My son (its his car) has now tried the spare key - good idea! But to no avail, unfortunately. The dodgy 'lock pick' looks like a possible - and we never thought about using a locksmith.

This might help

Ford wiki link

Make sure to read the bit at the bottom as well.

Yes, thanks, Dave - we have seen that one, and it might be the way to go.

seeing the vid, I think I would try to use a 'hole saw' to cut a neater hole in the plastic behind the badge. centring it might be a bit of a faff, but probably worth it.

We have a focus. At one point we couldn't open bonnet. Issue we had wasn't wear but the lock connection had moved. Struggle to explain. But we were able to take the grill out by cutting the clips that held the grill in to get access then we could open the bonnet. Might be worth googling to see if could work for you. Easier to replace the clips than all the damaged parts in previous posts

Problem we had

http://www.fordownersclub.com/forums/topic/35338-guide-to-fixing-common-focus-bonnet-lock-problem/

We removed grill with bonnet shut by cutting clips, but this may be easier if applicable to the mondeo.

Thanks for that link, Mccsp - I've not seen that one, that really is a cracking explanation with pin - sharp photos which are so much more helpful than most of these types of guides. Hope it works.

I will send it to my son and see if it works for him -

Cheers!
