Off road buggy plans
myke pocock - 19/7/21 at 12:21 PM

I need to scratch an itch!!! I want to build a locost or rather low cost single seat bike engine off road buggy, long travel suspension type buggy. It will need to be of square section tube as I dont want to invest in a tube bender. Anyone have experience of any plans available for such a beast and where I can get them from?

You probably better just forking out for a second hand tube bender and then selling it afterwards. It will make life a lot easier and allow you to build a much better chassis.

These are pretty useless. Bought one years ago and it was known as the tube squasher! Soon sold it on via the local machimery aution if I remember.

fill the tube with sand first to stop it being crushed

I bought it to build a Midlana but unfortunately that project has been cancelled. I've used it on scaffold pipes and it does an excellent job bending those. I agree about the sand filling method for thin stuff but have only done a couple of bends on an exhaust system which worked ok for me. As I said its been little used

Bear in mind that is a pipe bender not a tube bender. Pipe is ID based, tube is OD. Makes a difference to what it will bend without squishing

I bought one of those for our college workshop and anything of thinish wall it simply squashes it as commented. Sold it on hardly used.

There is an off-roader type buggy design by one Ron Champion- you may have heard of him!

No idea if the design is any good or suitable for your needs but would be good to see someone build one!
