It's beautifully done, but I can't help thinking that it would crush like a Coke can in any small collision

BenB - 23/12/09 at 04:29 PM

Teehee! My thoughts too. Replicating a steel car in aliminium without changing thicknesses / dimensions sounds a seriously bad idea....

Confused but excited. - 23/12/09 at 04:48 PM

I suppose, because he could.
It is a nice demonstation of his workshop skills for prospective clients.

The Toyota 2000GT was a rare and very pretty car.

Only 351 made while it was in production ( a couple of cconvertibles were made especially for the film You Only Live Twice)

Its up there in the best looking cars of all time imho but i would hate to even be a passenger in that one. Cant be very stiff either!

imp paul - 23/12/09 at 06:59 PM

wow very cool dam that mans good must be nice to have such skill

antonio - 23/12/09 at 07:22 PM

no matter it's stiff or not, it's a piece of art IMO.i would put it in my living room and watch tv in it!

Very impressive. The guys on American Hot Rod should see that cos it's a whole lot nicer looking than their aluminium monstrosity.

The welding is awful though.
As a demonstration of his workshop skills it fails miserably.
It doesn't matter how good the panels are if they're not joined together properly.
Geoff.

To all those asking why?...

"I get order of one off all aluminum Toyota 2000GT"

Maybe that has something to do with it?

I doubt the steel original has so much tubular framework supporting the body, and the car seems to have a seperate backbone chassis, so I can't see strength issues myself.

Wow - you've got some pretty high standards! Would love to see your work. Welding isn't the prettiest, but looks functional to me. I imagine any on display would be dressed.

Here are a few examples of the welding on our Phoenix. Aluminium and titanium, welded by my co-conspirator, Eldon.
Eldon does fuel tanks, breather tanks etc. and won't let anything out of the workshop if it's not up to his high standards.
Same goes for our own projects. Drives me mad sometimes!
The Phoenix is let down by second hand bodywork but it is for trackdays only.
He hasn't seen the Toyota pics but I know he'll agree with me. The concept is admirable as is the panel work. The welding is awful though.
Geoff.
