Everyday cars around £5k
JamJah - 4/3/09 at 01:33 PM

Looking for a new car that i can have some fun with. Budget £5k. Got to be an everyday drive. Unfortunately can;t wait for the Espona too much longer!

Thinking early Jag xK8.

The melting pot is officially open. Will be back in the wee hours to muse and reply!

Peugeot 406 coupe 3.0

TimC - 4/3/09 at 01:39 PM

E39 5-series. Absolute quality.

twybrow - 4/3/09 at 01:39 PM

Scoob!

Antnicuk - 4/3/09 at 01:43 PM

do you need fuel economy?

i had a 540 E39, superb car and very entertaining. I now have an E36 M3 Evo, also a stunning car but returns 34 mpg as a daily driver.

Both can be had for less than 5k and if before 2001 you pay cheap road tax IIRC.

tegwin - 4/3/09 at 01:43 PM

Seat Leon Cupra Type R... 1.8T 225hp?

Mr Whippy - 4/3/09 at 01:46 PM

you could build 20 locosts for that or buy 10 good second hand cars

apparently

anything VW with a turbo, cant go wrong IMO.

britishtrident - 4/3/09 at 01:54 PM

Much as the XK8 is very desirable you would have to be 100% sure it was a good one or you could find yourself with multi thousand pound repair bills.

I would be very tempted to buy one of the last P38 Range Rovers convert it to gas and either keep the remainder of the cash to deal with any unforseen problems or but an MGTF for Mazda Miata or sunny days

Everyday?

A recent Fiesta Zetec S.

If you need the extra space, get an E46 touring for norralorramoney - powerplant pretty much immaterial.

SAAB Aero or better still a 2.3 Eco power chipped - smaller turbo so it spins up faster.
Both Q cars in the right hands and lots of cheap'ish tuning goodies.
See /www.perryandprouse.co.uk/ Hot Aero '02 250bhp £3695.
Cheers, Pewe

Late ford focus st 170

tomprescott - 4/3/09 at 03:50 PM

Evo! Older celica or supra, skyline, go jap - reliable, powerful, comfortable!

Project7 - 4/3/09 at 04:43 PM

Mondeo ST220s are getting to within that budget now.

jimmyjoebob - 4/3/09 at 06:44 PM

I managed to delete my post that had appeared twice!

E30 325i Touring BMW. Simply awesome!

If it isn't quick enough as standard fit an ETA 2.7 crank and 320 E30 conrods and make it a 2.7 with 200hp and lots or torque!

whats wrong with him?

Id get a 4 door but would agree, the 406 v6s are awesome in exec spec.

Nowhere near 5k though!

I quite fancy an old subaru legacy twin turbo

I love the old XK's but i have to be honest, i would go for an XJR. For that money you could buy a good one, possibly 2000/2001 ish. If you go for a V8 engined jag, pre 2001 make sure it has a steel lined engine and has had the timing chain tensioners upgraded to aluminium (i think) ones.

greggors84 - 4/3/09 at 08:14 PM

Can you get an early Audi S3 for that?

My flatmate has one, it goes like stink, the quattro grips amazingley and the brakes are awesome!

Bullet proof too.

zilspeed - 4/3/09 at 08:48 PM

Invisiblility required ?

Passat W8.

The most boring choice so far I suspect and will remain so. It would be my choice for sheer discretion.

I'm in the E39 5 series camp.

Great car for the money if you get a good one.

Modern SAABs have a pretty poor engine reliabilty record --- mainly lubrication and timing chain problems.

JamJah - 5/3/09 at 03:04 PM

Thanks for the opinions guys. I think between you you have listed every car in the police force!!
I had heard of the tensioner problems as well as the suspension and bore liners.
Just something seems drawing me to it..!
I will carry on looking with a open mind.
