Sorry it not on a car - its on a bit of lab equipment. At first glance it looks like an Allen bolt but it has a rounded bottom and is extremely shallow - its also down a hole...

any ideas?

looks like it could be either a security bolt of some type, they get driven in but then the driven bit breaks off at a preset torque. how is the other end fixde?

Cannot see the other end. It is a bolt which holds a heated block shaker onto its base. The other end is in the the base under the shaker block.

Buy a set of security bits, there will be one in there that fits it. Screwfix version.

Security bit in this case = just a hex allen key/socket with a hole up the middle

Looks to me as a rounded Allen key bolt some monkey has already tried to undo.

Drill it out.

Or of course it could be a security torx or custom security head. Maybe a call to the manufacturers will help. Or even a suitable lab equipment maintenance company if there is one that covers your type of equipment.

To me it looks like a allen head that someones already butchered or a Allen head with a security ball dropped in. I'd try to tap a splined bit in and see what occurs.

Do the letters embosed on the top say ADL?

Depending how tight the bolt is you could try what i did to get a Dyson apart
I found a old screw driver and cut a slot in the middle of the blade and put it diagonal across the bold head
