V8 engine sound?
coozer - 8/11/10 at 06:16 PM

Is it possible to plumb a 3.9L Rover V8 so it sounds like this?

Awesome V8

Or do I need the mother of all big blocks to get it?

sounds like my 3.5 did with just a 4 into one manifold and on each side and two cherry bomb silencers...great sound but too loud to drive!

The secret is a link pipe, two straight through exhausts sound like two mis-firing four cylinder engines.

What a bunch of dickhead howlers !!

did sound nice though

Paradoxia0 - 8/11/10 at 06:49 PM

I toyed with the idea quite a lot about trying to get some form of link pipe sorted to try to get the V8 burble from mine, but I did't know enough to attempt it...

Is it really as simple as running a link pipe between the 2 exhausts? I.e. straight across from just after the 4-1 collectors?

Mark

P.S Sorry to semi-hijack your thread!

And no helmet!! mad sod i bet he has nutted that rollbar a few times

MikeRJ - 8/11/10 at 06:56 PM

That video got tedious very quickly...

"That video got tedious very quickly..."

YES IT DID !!

and those twits at the end ????

Yes thats what TVR do with there V8's, makes them sound so good.

Here's the sound of my rover V8 powered TVR.

Just a random note, if you want a full on American V8 sound then go for a normal link pipe (sometimes called a H-pipe for obvious reasons).

You get a different sound with an X-pipe (as fitted to my M5).

PAUL FISHER - 8/11/10 at 09:02 PM

TVR use a Y section.

hobbsy - 8/11/10 at 10:12 PM

I've always marvelled at how big those pipes are on a TVR, surely they don't need to be that big? I thought that really big bore pipes are great on forced induction but only help the top end on an NA engine - i.e. they can shift the peak torque up the rev range so peak power is up but at the expense of the bottom and mid range. Although with a whacking great V8 I suppose they don't lack low end torque...

Either way they sound spot on

mark chandler - 8/11/10 at 10:17 PM

Something 2/3rd the size of the main pipes just after the collectors straight across does the trick, it is that simple

You get the noise as the engine fires 18436572 so Right, Left, Left, Right, Left, Right, Right, Left

RazMan - 8/11/10 at 11:26 PM

Its definitely all about the balance pipe - X, Y & H versions all affect the sound but also power.
Buggered if I can remember which is which though

I think the only reason they are that big, is to fit in the catalytic converters, there are two pre cats, one in each manifold, and one main cat in the Y piece.

Pure generalisation as you all know there's exceptions to any rule but X for best power then H and finally Y. Noise can be to taste but again X or H with two separate pipes per back are prefered by many. Mines has a Y but it's quite far back under the car and certainly doesn't appear to reduce power much!

First start of my RX7 V8 conversion

If anything the Y setup on my engine may make it quite a smooth sound.

First dyno run at AJec Racing

Loving that, its good power out of a LS1 have you done any mods to the engine, I keep thinking it would be a good project fitting one of those with the 6 speed box with the extra 100bhp would be a good conversion for my TVR, only thing that puts me off is the rover is such a good engine, unlike the Rotary in the RX7, I wish people would stop posting video's up like that, might have to buy a RX7 with a blown engine now, and a LS1 engine of course

Apart from a bespoke exhaust system made on the car and twin K & N filters. My base engine came from a HSV Monaro which was rated at 380BHP rather than the more common 350 BHP LS1s from Camaros, GTOs and Corvettes.

I think the Rover V8s are good to a point then they can't compare on costs.
