Sierra Box
Hammy360 - 23/11/10 at 12:28 PM

I've just bought a 1990 Ford Sierra as my donor, how do I find out the gearbox type that it has? Also I havent decided between the MK Indy or the Tiger Avon, any thoughts? I'll be ordering my kit this week so your advice is appreciated

Reverse position will tell you.

Up and to the left is a type 9

Down and to the right is an MT75.

Or look underneath to see if the bell housing is integral to the box, (MT75 is integral, type 9 is bolted)

You could also order a comprehensive kit from saturn based on the haynes roaster, its another option to add to mix and very similar i believe to the MK.

Check with the kit mfr before committing yourself. There aren't too many chassis will take the MT75 box, but most will handle the type 9

I'm not sure on what donor parts the MK Indy uses, but if you are going Avon (like me), then make sure that you can source all the required donor parts. The gearbox is one of the harder ones - hopefully you've got a type-9. The cortina uprights are getting rare too.

You can see a picture of each gearbox here:

MT75

Type-9

Good luck!

Hi

Just to clarify - the MT75 box pictured in the post above is the 4WD version, the 2WD one does not have the power take off at the rear and is therefore narrower.
