Engine Mount Material Choice
RobLyon - 26/3/12 at 10:00 PM

Hi,

Our engine mount snapped at the weekend on our silvertop zetec engined striker. We're after making replacements for both mounts but not sure what to make them out of? The one fitted was 38mm O/D ~1.2mm wall.

We're wanting to make it stronger to prevent it breaking again, Would 38mm 1.5mm wall ERW be up to the job?

The engine is fairly solidly mounted with just a metalastic bush to allow for movement, however we may replace this for poly if we can find suitable replacements,

Cheers,

Rob

I went for Mild Steel Round Tube Pipe 33.7mm x 3mm, Mild Steel Discs 100mm x 5mm for the base mount and then some flat Steel Bar 120mm x 5mm for the plates that bolt to the block.

From these people who I would highly recommend http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/steel2go/?_trksid=p4340.l2559

Not acctually made them yet, but plan for them to be based around the Raw style ones that Im guessing yours were. Similar to these?

I've gone for polybushes, thus....

And my top mount....

There's a enough movement to soak up any clumsy clutchwork but its solid enough to stop the cam wheels from bashing the chassis.
