What Engine
brianl0922 - 25/4/12 at 07:57 AM

I'm already planning for next winter and was thinking of replacing my 1.8 Silvertop to get more power. Its running on twin 40 DCOE webers. Whats the collective's view on the best engine for an upgrade without too much work remodelling. I was looking to get somewhere near the 180 - 200 BHP mark in the IRS Fury.

Duratec ST150 will give you 150BHP and then adding throttle bodies will get you 180-190 and then fit fast road cams for 200BHP.

a change to a duratec is an option, and the IRS Fury will take exhausts on either side. The Duratec is the opposite way round to the Zetec

Is sticking with Zetec pattern easier as a drop in? Perhaps spend the money on a 2.0 head, bigger valves, and TB's Just a thought,...

I did think about a duratec but I thought that would mean a lot more work involved bellhousing, manifolds, engine mounts etc. What BHP could I expect from a 2.0 silvertop?

I would have thought you'd get to 180 bhp by sticking on an injection pump (fit a swirl pot fed by your existing low pressure pump) a 2l head, 45-48mm throttle bodies, ECU (and probably a cam). If it goes pop, upgrade to a 2.0l and get 200bhp by re-using all the above the set up. Burton power or similar are only a phone call away for advice, and that has to be easier than swapping the engine/exhaust/fuel supply/engine mounts........

Regards
Hugh

Just change your 1800 zetec for a tuned 2000 blacktop zetec - straight swap (assuming your 1800 is blacktop?)

I'd go for fuel injection using Jenvey 45s (bike throttle bodies are poor in comparison) and a pair of piper 285s. Stock head and bottom end.

You will need a good exhaust, 1.3/4" headers 2.5" system.

This will make 190BHP

Nitrous....

Thats prob the cheapest way to power, would take a 100bhp shot no problem as long as the timing was retarded when nitrous system is armed. Then you would have 220-250BHP still on your carbs!!

2L zetec with fast road cams and your on your way to 200bhp.

I've decided after wasting my cash on TB's to go down the turbo route to 350bhp for the same money!

You'll make 300+ with turbo but it wont last long unless you change pistons (rods are OK)

Can you really get 350bhp from a turbo'd zetec without major changes....rods, pistons, crank etc????????

Its a silvertop. Would adding a 2.0ltr head, throttle bodies and a megajolt/megasquirt and fast road cams get me to 180bph? Would the head have to be skimmed/ported?

Fizzer - 26/4/12 at 07:56 AM

I've made the change from 1.8 silvertop to 2.0 blacktop (sucked a stone through the last engine...oops) I'm running weber 45s, Newman cams (ph3) and alpha ignition, it makes 178bhp. Head is off being ported at the moment and am hoping for ~200 with a little carb tweaking. I would expect similar figures for a 2.0 silvertop.
Weber 40's might be a tad restrictive, but good, used 45s are cheap.

If you do the swap, alternator belt needs an idler pulley and water pump exit is slightly different, balcktop rocker cover is a tad taller. Apart from that, its a very simple swap.

No need for bigger valves, rods, pistons, funky bellhousings or throttle bodies to get 200hp, just spend cash on what you have.

More than 200hp and you may need to get a hd type9

I like the idea of keeping what I have and tuning it, what I dont want to do is spend £££££s for only a small increase in BHP. I also like the idea of going turbo but not sure what that would involve and how much it would cost.

Fitting a 2.0L head to a 1.8L bottom end will not help at all. The 2.0L cams are slightly better than the 1.8L so you could install a pair of 2.0L cams in your 1.8L head. No need to taKe head off, if silvertop its a very simple job as no shims to worry about.

If you turbocharged it you would really need to go fuel injection, but a metro turbo carb and megajolt will work OK.

The metro carb (blowthru) will feed well over 200BHP.

If you go fuel injection with a proper turbo conversion you are looking at £3K, We have done several.

What is a metro turbo carb? Where would I get one and what would be involved in fitting one?

Thanks

Do you remember the MG Metro Turbo?? it use a sealed SU carb, force fed by a garrett T3 turbo.

Have a look on the web.

A basic inlet manifold can be made up to suit a zetec (some like bogg brothers could make you one), the SU would bolt to the inlet manifold, inlet of SU fed (use the metro carb inlet bit) via an intercooler. For upto 200BHP a T3 turbo off an Escort RS Turbo will do, for more than 200BHP use a T3 off a Cosworth.
