Escort Axle Half Shaft Bearing

Hi All, I'm after some advice

I've got to change the half shaft bearing on my Striker, I believe that the axle is from a MK2 Escort

I've borrowed a slide hammer. Due to having a narrow garage, the work will have to be done on my drive, so I'd prefer to get it all in and out in a day

I've changed the bearings on a Capri axle a very long time ago, but not Escort


Are there any retaining clips or a sleeve to hold the bearing onto the shaft, or is it just a press fit?
If it's just a press fit, can this be done without heat or a proper press? (I do have access to these at work, but I won't be there for a week)

it,s a press fit with a super tight retainer on the inside, the only way unless you have a million ton press is to cut the retainer with a cutting disc on an angry grinder, sometimes you have to break the bearing and cut the inner race as well....same as a capri really

tbh I'd just take it round to the local garage and give them the hassle. Most ask for very little money if any. I do this for all my axle and bush replacements as they have all the expensive kit and sometimes if their really busy they let me just use it but usually I just tell them there's no rush and they do it in a couple of days at most. I've got better things to do with my time

Excellent advice and I've done/do the same myself - professional garages have the proper kit to do the jobs. As you say they rarely ask for much (if any) money to do a small job either. A decent stack of biscuits often helps

Just bear in mind a lot of garages/mechanics these days won't have seen or done one of these.

We used to (pre angle grinder) split the retainer with a chisel and BFO hammer... Just watch out for the flying bits. They've been known to cause shrapnel wounds
