Morris Sprite gearbox

Hi All

Throwing this one out there for some advice...
I have a Formula 750 race car that came with a newly built Sprite gearbox with straight cut gears. However what I cant get my head around is the gear selection.
Its a reverse H selection i.e. 1st is where 3rd is, 3rd is where 1st should be? I have no idea why its like this or if this is a normal setting, but its bloody confusing when driving.. (cant get in contact with previous owners to find out why)

Any idea's? Can it be put back to a standard Gear selection?

Any advice welcomed... (within reason )

That's weird, I dove a friends Sprite years ago and it was a normal shifter but terrible brakes. Is there some sort of aftermarket gear selector fitted?

There's this great you tube series which may shed light on it linky

Maybe post a photo to see if anyone can spot what's going on.

are 2nd und 4th in the wrong place as well, sounds like the lever is now a straight push as oposed to having a swivel ie....push the gear knob forewards, balljoint where lever goes into the box and then the movement is towards the back when it gets to the selector rods if that makes sense ?

Yes 2nd and 4th are also swapped.

What's the car/transmission layout? Is it a remote lever with rods to the box? If so it could be a function of how that's been achieved.

Managed to grab a photo. Looks like its modified so that gear lever position in far enough forward....

Not sure if this can now be changed to give a standard H selection

deffo been modified, the only way back would be to take the remote off and start again

holy crap look at the spacing for the gate! how is that possible to get enough movement to operate the selector?? I wonder what weirdness is going on inside that housing, you need to take a picture once you've removed it, I'm very curious now

Do you need an Allen key to select reverse...?

Tazzzzman1 - 23/5/22 at 01:03 PM

Reverse is just pushing to the far rear left which pushes the sprung loaded guard aside...works ok and is a safeguard to prevent inadvertent reverse selection in the heat of the moment.
But yes reckon I could be looking at a new remote selector housing and shortening, to give correct lever positioning. I can probably get away with 2" back and bending the shifter lever forward.
