Anyway, give me a few weeks and I'll post up any progress.
I was thinking for a little side project to remove the boring leather gearstick gaiter on my type 9 lever and replace it with a cool looking H gate
plate, Ferrari styleee.
Has anyone tried this? Think it would work?
Of course I'll use CAD (Cardboard Aided Design) to make a prototype first. Then try for a polished ali one....
I had been thinking the same but on my MX5 box. The main issue I have is the thickness of the stick vs the throw doesn't leave me with distinct
'channels' to cut out of metal. Having said that I did see a kit where the stick is replaced with something much thinner (but hopefully of
similar strength).
If you do some measurements on how far your stick shifts at the height of the gate, vs how the stick is, you could work out how much space you have.
Of course, that's all I started to think about initially, I'm sure there are other things to consider like gearbox movement vs tolerances,
etc.

why not simply put the gate at a higher level [further from the pivot?]
I'll have a check on the spacing v lever throw at tunnel top height and see if it's possible, but I think due to small box movement during
driving it might just be a plate with funny shaped hole in it, which might not be too bad, if it's nicely polished.
Anyway, give me a few weeks and I'll post up any progress.

I made an H plate for my locost, as the reverse detent was missing, and very easy to select reverse and not first
it was 10 mm alui, and pretty good, except for ..... it let into the cockpit a lot of toxic smoke, engine heat, noise, and probably rain!
the downsides were not as good as the ups
This probably is the reason H plates are more suited to a rear engine car
Mine only lasted a year, and i went back to a vinyl shroud

A box with a cable linkage can be body mounted with no problem
Otherwise you'll need to add enough 'slop' to account the movement of the box relative to the body which would seem to defeat the point
to me....
As for fumes and such, you can still use a small rubber gator - just mounted upside down below the gate

OK, I'm going to expose my ignorance here, I thought the gates were mounted to the body? There's a few on here https://www.hotcars.com/most-powerful-car-with-gated-manual-transmission/ that appear to be separate to the gearbox?
Unless I'm missing something here, which definitely wouldn't be the first time!
