bugger - broken down

on phone so excuse spelling!

sitting at roadside with a broken car!

Running fine, then no go when putting your foot down (lean)

then started running massively rich, the seemingly retarded by exhaust temps!

also ecu wont talk to laptop anymore so no diagnosis that way is possible.

fuel pump not working right either (controlled by ecu)

So doesnt look like we will be going to stoneleigh in the gts after all

maybe omex wasnt such a bad idea afterall!

connections appear ok.

odd thing is with laptop plugged into ecu the fuel pump runs with the key in but still doesnt run right or report its connected to the ecu

comms are also seperate to main loom connection.

It does sound like a nackered MS, but make sure all the fuses are ok. I was surprised at how many the MS needed of its own!!

Laptop with a 12V charger? If so, It could be proividing a ground to the MS through that. I'd check the ground connections first and make sure the MS processor is still firmly seated in place. They have a tendency to fall out...

It'll be something minor, don't worry. If you've got a stim, try the MS on that once you are back home.

you been letting the magic smoke out of your ECU?

could be worse. The engine could have popped under the newly found pressure!!!

Still sucks on a sunny day though!!

David check all your fuse for the ecu I had a LOT of problems with mine initially and the pump was playing up at the same time.
It turned out to be a fuse I had put in temp for the coil ( went open circuit and the ms did not like it) and was cylicing the fuel pump but only sometimes

If it looks wrong it probably is wrong.

If its a home built ECU eg Megasquirt. Just check all the chips that are in sockets like the processor etc, are pressed fully home.

Check connections, ie make sure they are all well connected.

Check all the fuses etc, and especially ALL the Earth Connections.

I have had chips work loose and cause odd problems. Its a quick and easy check.

You have a FULL week to sort this...

We know you can do it!

Good luck.

Very sorry to hear, atleast it happened locally rather than at Stoneleigh? Sounds like a simple problem considering what you've solved next week. Hope to see you next weekend!

im thinking along the same lines as geoff. has the daughter board worked loose or a jumper fallen off.

cant see it stopping you from going to stoneleigh. worst case scenario you could just buy a pre-built ms fit it and get the car running then repair your old one and sell it on to recover your costs.

Got back around 5:30 been out trying to find the cause of the problems.

I'll elaborate a little now I have a proper keyboard!

All running ok until we got to Thetford (not far up the road from Bury!) then turned on to A134 and tried to accelerate and it went totally lean (20+AFR) thought it was a little odd, tried again and the same result. Then once I got up to speed it was crusing at around 12.5afr, normally 14.3.

So immediate thought was a MAP line had come dislodged so ECU was seeing 100kpa only. So pulled over in a garage to explore and fill up at the same time.

Then tried to restart and no go. PLugged laptop in, then no comms at all. But engine would then run. The fuel pump wouldnt fire its priming pulse without the laptop plugged in.

Retarted the engine and it would only run massively rich (<9AFR) Limped another 5 miles up the road but engine running hugely retarded evidenced by very high exhaust temps. Just got worse and worse

Finally gave up and pulled into layby on quiest side road and engine just died as I came to a stop. Left ignition on and high pressure pump continued to run, which it shouldnt.

Still no go when we got home so proceeded to check connections.

No problem on the comms cable or with serial adaptor that I could find.

Checked power and earths to ECU and no problems. ECU is multiple earthed to all possible pins on connector so all would have to be faulty. Still no high pressure pump without laptop plugged in.

Removed ECU and visual inspection showed no problems - i'll have a closed look at the soldered joints tomorrow.

Reconnected everything about 10mins ago and everything is working again now. Laptop comms and car runs fine with laptop connected or not.

Very strange indeed.....

David

Weird!

I am sure that on my second post, i was typing to check if MS was well ventilated.

Oh well.

Open it up. Make sure that everything is still in place and if possible add some heatsinks on the chips.
