Its Duty rather than VAT (at least thats how Parcel Force detailed it on my last shipmint which got "hit" for it).
Its 17.5% of the $ invoice amount (including the shipping fee) sometimes with an admin charge because the local courier had to pay the funds up front.
Parcel Force charge an £8 admin fee (if there is a duty charge), and thats who it goes through for USPS shipments.
So, if the item costs $100, shipping is $30 then you'll be hit for 17.5% of $130. Same if the shipping is $110 and the item is $20.
That said, even if you do pay the duty, the way the $ is currently everything is still cheaper from the USA than sourced locally.
