WEP Key
Am i right in understanding that a wireless routers default WEP key is the serial number that appears underneath?
If not does anyone know a quick way to locate the WEP key. My computer is connected to the wireless router now, ive tried looking for some settings in
the laptop.

I am definately not a computer specialist, but I think I vaguely remember someone looking up a default WEP-key from the manufacturers website.

my wep key is on a stcker on mine, i don't think its the same as the serial numer, i don't think its a generic number either

If you can't find it why not just go into the routers setup and change it (also change it to WPA, more secure!).

I have no idea how to im afraid. Mooky has just said i will need ethernet cable, they are in a box in loft so i cant get them tonight (will wake kids
up etc).

I've got an orange livebox and the key is on a sticker on the bottom of the box.

A lot of the big ISP's give you a default key thats already setup (in a drive to make people use encryption rather be lazy and not bother).
E.g. BT, Orange etc.
If you get the ethernet cable and are able to log into it that way as someone else said you can set it up yourself to whatever you like.
And use WPA or WPA2 as they are more secure than WEP.

Its a D-link DSL-G624T.
Dont know what you mean by access point.
Ive accessed the router with the 168.xxx.1.1 site or whatever it is. Found part where the wep key is but it was hidden (****** etc).
I think entering the s/n from sticker on router has worked but the BBC i-player still wont.

Where the Key is starred out on the router settings... change the key and press update.
Then change the key on the computer.
Definately both are the same then and you know what the key is! Although if they weren't you wouldnt have access.
A problem only with iPlayer would suggest a port needing 'opening'

Is it really that simple?
Am i right in assuming that a 64 bit key is 13characters and 128bit key is 26 characters? I dont think the phone allows 26.
Annoying bit about the N96 is that the manual is very lacking in detail and i cant find more comprehensive ones (unless they are on the disc).

Would work out to be right as each character is 4 bits plus the check.
Although I dont think WEP has to be a certain number of characters. but then that might be the difference between theory and practise and i am tired
so am not really thinking now!
As stated before WPA is stronger than WEP. certainly recommended unless you have to prove access to older items that dont support it!!

I had already posted the link to the page on the the Dlink site to download the manual firmware etc.
Admitted it was an edit, but I did do it immediately after the post.

If you can get to the routers home page - and it appears you can, change the security to WPA-PSK and enter a password. Save the settings and when you
try to access the internet with your PC, it will ask for the password as will your N96 with its WIFI connection. It is that simple.
Just done it for my N85

I sussed it in the end. Hidden within the Nokia user friendly menu system was a wlan security page. The encryption type was different to router. Once
corrected and full WEP key entered all was well. Or at least it is at the moment (apparently there is a firmware update due sonn that corrects some
glitches in the 10.065 firmware).
Ive also now spoken to 3 technical assistance who have said they will send me a text as soon as the new firmware is due.
