Sump Mod

Hi all,

After having a 'dry run' of my engine/gearbox fit so I can crack on with the tunnel construction, I was looking at whether or not to do the sump mod on my Pinto.

After looking at the details, it seems that there is not going to be much point in taking more thatn around 1" of max as the bottom of the bell housing will be lower than the sump if I do?

I know many people have done it but is it really worth it?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

JB

If i'd kept my pinto car I'd have trimmed the sump and the bell housing to get the ground clearance improved...

Aha!

Didn't think it would be feasible to trim the bellhousing too. Being of unsound mind it never entered my head!

what would you suggest in terms of clearance between the flywheel and the modded casing?

I removed 40mm that's about all you can mod the pick up pipe and 40mm makes it level with the bottom of the bell housing
Don'T forget to extend the sump forward with a tank or on the side to make a bigger oil capacity

DO IT!!

Mine's a V6 not a Pinto but the sump is about the same. I didn't think it would be that bad and all I heard were a few scrapes every now and then.

Once in the garage, the extent of the damage was apparant and I'm now in the process of shortening the sump

pinto sump

when shortening the sump my advise would be to add the extra bit on the front not the side as i found with mine it fouls the clutch cable which then cuases a sticky clutch pedal (very annoying)
