Engine swap - cvh to zetec

Just got my Haynes Roadster on road with a 1800cvh engine in but engine has started knocking, changed big end shells and hydraulic lifters but still knocking. A local say the crank needs refacing, but i've decided its not worth spending the money on when in 6 months time i'll be upgrading the engine anyway.
Are there any points to consider when changing the engine, the only main thing i'm concerned about is the wiring (any advice would be a help). I need to keep this cheap so megasquirt is not really an option.

Thanks in advance....Andy

Megajolt and bike carbs then?? The wiring is pretty simple and covered on a few websites. I made a loom from scratch following the destructions in a couple of hours. I'd say this route would be pretty much as cheap as you can get really.

Just remember the usual things - 2L engine ideally needs a 1.8L water pump to ensure it turns the correct way. 1.8 flywheel is lighter so offers a cost saving to a Burton / Dunnell / Raceline etc lightweight flywheel. Look at the options for a shortened sump.

Bike carbs and Megajolt? Dead easy on a zetec (1.8 out of an Escort is the easiest) and can be done for under £200... including the engine!

In fact even cheaper if using the ECU from a few coil packed carb model Escorts and Orions.

Price wise, it can be done for very little,

You could use the cvh sump and weld a new flange on the exhaust.

Get an escort and as says you get the waterpump and flywheel you need.

You can also stick a single weber on the zetec aswell if out and out performance is not a must.

CVH carb or injection inlet manifold can be fitted to a Zetec head.

A Rover 2 litre M16 or T16 inlet manifold can also be fitted -----

You might find this link of interest ---- prices are a bit ott

This is what I did, so let me know if you need any tips.

The CVH exhaust, flywheel & clutch can be used. If using the CVH Flywheel you'll need to also use the CVH trigger wheel on the Zetec front pulley. The advantage is that the CVH flywheel is loads lighter than a 1.8 Zetec one.
Also saves on buying a new clutch if you have a good one already.

ZX6R carbs work great with a megajolt and cost very little. I've got a home made ZX6R inlet manifold for non re-spaced carbs if you are interested.

Thanks Stu, i've found a 2.0l focus zetec on ebay for £92 with 3 hours to go. The engine is in good condition but has no wiring loom, alternator or starter with it so i think i'll be going for the zx6r bike carbs (very cheap) and megajolt kit (also seen one on ebay for £26 with edis kit, it is the jr lite 3.0 version).

Interested in the manifold Stu, how much do you want for it.

Stu, do you have some brief bullet points of what needs to be done to fit the zetec.

Thanks to all....Andy
