Do i need a Cat?
Hi everyone,
I have a Audi coupe that i am breaking and i am intending to use its engine and complete running gear in my saab.
For now i will be using the original ECU and electrics.
However will i need a cat for this to all work properly?
I think a cat is only to reduce toxic emissions? I won't need a cat for that as the engine will be tested to 1976 emissions.
If thats the case i can sell it as they are very expensive from Audi.
So does anyone think the ECU will not be happy if i de cat the engine?
Cheers

If your engine doesn't have a lambda sensor the cat won't even work efficiently even if you fitted one.
The engine though won't careless if ones fitted or not as it simply won't know about. I replaced one of my cavaliers cats with a piece of
pipe after seeing the price of a replacement and despite so called car experts claiming it wouldn't run properly, it ran just fine and even
passed the MOT a few months later.
Save your money for something worth while

You can definately run a car without a cat and as said without a lambda sensor to control mixture you'ld likely just kill the cat through
running rich anyway.... A decat pipe is a common "performance" upgrade. There are now "race" cats that cause less of a
restriction. Trouble is they also do diddly squat at high engine revs. Anyway, the glowing red hot headers catalyse the oxides quite nicely
anyway!!!
Only issue would be getting through MOTs, if it'll def be tested to 1976 visual smoke only then no matter....

well it has a new cat on it, but the price of a new one is over £200 so could prob sell it for half that and would be a nice addition to the project
fund!
Same for the exhuast, a proper audi one is very expensive but they do last forever, I am pretty sure my 80 is on its original and its over 20 years
old and has done 160,000 miles.
