How hard is it to get a quote for engine work?

I've got a lightweight flywheel, fast road cams and ramtubes to go on to my 4age 20v Silvertop.

I don't have the necessary kit or technical know-how to do the job myself so I want to book it in to a garage to get the work done.

As the flywheel is an engine out job I thought I'd get the head ported at the same time.

I've spoken with a few local garages who take the details and then never call back with quotes!

I thought they would be looking to get as much work in as possible these days.

This is obviously too difficult or too much work for them.

Any locoster's looking to earn a few extra quid in the West Sussex area?

I think you need to find a local engine builder as opposed to a general servicing/MoT type place. Having said that the 2 engine builders I know local to me don't like to have the actual car in their workshops, just the engine.

I've been speaking to engine builders! I've spoken to 4 and not one has got back to me.

Seems if I can get the head off myself they are more interested in doing the work but it's the other bits that seem to cause the problems.

I think it's the flywheel that puts them off as it's probably an engine out job.

don't write OT on a new thread title, you're creating the topic, everything you write is very much ON topic!

Why not just bite the bullet and hire or borrow a crane and pull the engine out yourself?? Its a great way to learn - take plenty of pics and notes to help you with reassembly and any advice you need is only a search or thread on here away. You will need a few bits n bobs to do the job - clutch alignment tool etc but will still work out cheaper to do it - plus you will learn loads about your car

If I had an engine crane and the technical ability I'd have a go but I don't.

Your going to find it very hard to find a garage that will take the engine out of a kit car and then do the jobs that you want doing, If you do find one then they are going to charge a hell of a lot to do it.

I think its time to get some local help and have a go yourself.

I new nothing about engines but using a manual and this site managed to strip and rebuild a V8 without any problems. The trick is to take your time and ask for help when you need it.

engine cranes can be hired cheap enough from HSS (about £40 for a weekend, last time i hired. i bought one a couple of years back though)

all it is really, is diconnecting a few wires and cables (marking what they are and where they come from) and fuel lines and lift it out. you may not have the technical ability, but then at some point, no one on this forum did, and look what we're all achieving!

go on! get amongst it!

There are plenty out there but you may have to travel to get the best. Northampton Motorsport are excellant and Interpro in Thornbury Bristol also. Best bet is to contact your local motorsport club, they will know someone to recomend in your area

I know you're all right and I really should do the job myself.

Ideally I'd love to do the job and learn a little more. It doesn't look too difficult when you have the necessary equipment.

Main issue for not doing it myself is the time.

I've just setup my own business and don't have enough spare time to research and complete the job (slowly and carefully).

The car could be off the road for the best months of the year hence the reason for getting it done by a professional.

I'm happy to pay the going rate, just need to find a place to do it!

I have found one place that can do some of the work but they can't tell me when they can fit it in due to other work.

It might be easier to split the jobs rather than trying to get one place to do them all.

I'm sure I can get the ramtubes fitted and the cylinder head off for porting.

Worzey,

I have the perfect garage for you if you're prepared to leave your kit car in Cheltenham. I was pretty much in your position with minimal tools and no knowledge. So my Striker was built in the corner of the Mech Repairs workshop.

They specialise in engine develoment for small manufacturers. For example all the RAW and OMEX engine packages have been developed there including the 16V and 20V engines. My highly developed 4AGE 20V was built there and I did a lot of the work myself but under supervision.

So speak to Brian the owner but a like a lot of commercial garages they'll quote you an hourly rate but not a fixed price. As there are too many variables and hidden costs but at least they have knowledge on the exact engine you have.

Speak to Brian on 01242 243385

Mech Repairs website

Have a look under SERVICES, PROJECTS, RAW STRIKER (top picture) that's my car being built in the workshop, dyno'd then taken to Llandow for a pre-SVA shakedown!

Depends where you are and what they are prepared to do, but I have dealt with QEP before (on my old Peugeot 205 GTi) and was very impressed - I don't know if they would take the engine out, give them a ring:

Thanks for the input. I've followed up a few of these lines of enquiry and hope to get some quotes in soon.

Trying the local ones first and then starting to look further away.

I'm bending over backwards to get work in at the moment. Obviously I need to be in the motor trade, it would be nice to have to turn work away.
