according to Mr Haynes....
quote: The OHC engines fitted to the Sierra/P100 range which have suitable valve seat inserts fitted at manufacture can be identiffied by letters
stamped on the head next to No 4 spark plug as follows:
1.6 = M, MM, N or NN
1.8 = S or SS
2.0 = L, P, PP, R or RR
its in the igniton timing section of the sierra book

so if i dont have L, P, PP, R or RR on the block it means that the head doesn't have the hardened seat valves and i can run the engine for
prolonged periods on unleaded fuel, what do i need to do if the head doesn't have the lettering

you could have hardened seats fitted unless some one has allready done it on your head (I'm not sure how you'd tell that - I'm sure
someone here will know....)

I've done 3000 miles in anger on a non-hardened head with unleaded fuel. After a strip down there was no damage to the valve seats etc. For the
amount of miles we do in a kit car don't worry about it.
Are you a Mac user or a retard?

You can buy a pinto for a tenner anyway so if it gimps then bin it and get another. Or get a vulcan head or summit.
Sorry I know that doesnt answer your question.

You'll probably be fine with the small milages, the head will have a "lead memory" which will take quite a while to wear off.
If you decide to have the head converted, remember that you only need to have the exhaust valves done.
If you want to check whether your head has already been converted to unleaded, clean the area around one of the exhaust valve seats and look for a
ring of brighter metal around the seat, most inserts are stainless.
The other alternative is to use a lead replacement treatment in the fuel.
Cheers
Chris
Note to all: I really don't know when to leave well alone. I tried to get clever with the mods, then when they gave me a lifeline to see the
error of my ways, I tried to incite more trouble via u2u. So now I'm banned, never to return again. They should have done it years ago!

Like a Locost which does not get used everyday (gets parked 6 months every year) I have a 1976 boat with a Chev inline 6, sticker on fuel cap says
minimum 96 octane leaded fuel, been running 90 octane unleaded since mid 80's, still running. I f you think about it a boat motor never gets to
coast, it's always running up hill.
