From your post, I am guessing that you are putting a Pinto engine in an original locost chassis. (This is what I did)
If so, I made my sump level with the bottom of the type 9 gearbox.

yeah, I really had to.
There is a chap on here 'Deneo' who does the best welding you will ever see in your life. He made a really good job of my sump, and
modified my rocker cover to put the filler spout at the back. Try sending him a u2u.
Cheers,
B

Defo has to be shortened. More so the wheels touch the ground more than so the sump doesnt occasionally catch!
I didnt big wing mine, i extended it fully forward. i also raised the front edge to act as a bit of a skid plate rather than having a square edge to
hit against if it does ever catch. Bottom was also 3mm thick on mine.
From memory Mark Allanson did a great guide. I posted a load of pics etc ages ago (probs some time in 2005) too.

Quite easy to do. Can be a sod to fully seal up.

I've got to do mine, what's the views on using metal putty to fill any tiny holes that may exist after welding?

i got to the stage where i was sitting mine with water in it overnight. Not leakingas such but you could see where tiny bubbles of water were just
getting through. In the end i minimised them by over welding and then applied wurth bond and seal liberally over the outsides of the welded joins.
Been fine since.
Dont forget to fasten the sump down onto something solid. I used an old piece of kitchen worktop. Its good to minimise distortion. I must admit though
that i fitted the sump and also sealed over the join.
