Rollbar painting Hammerite Spray or brush
Hi all, just contenplating painting my rollbar.
I am planning to use Hammerite Red oxide undercoat and Hammerite satin black as a top coat, question is whether to brush on or spray using their
aerosols.
I know they say you dont need undercoat - but it seems to me better with one?
Hammerite tends to be a bit gloopy in my experience so if I went down the brush route I was going to thin it a little bit with their thinners.
Anyone had any experience of using either - can you get a good finish?

Hammerite is pump in my experience. What you want and what was recommended to me is a product called Rust O leum. They have a hardened range or words
around that effect and it really is good stuff. You still have to use a primer, any will do. I bought a large aerosol of it from the local engineers
supplies for about £10 but it does the job and I wished I'd used it on the actual chassis now.

I'd spray whatever you use but in my experience Hammerite isn't that chip-proof so I'd personally use something else....
Def use a good primer.

I used Halfords red oxide spray primer (after thoroughly cleaning the roll bar with the angle grinder wire brush and washing/drying) built up in 3-4
thin coats. The top coat was done with Plastikote satin black enamel spray (Halfords/Homebase/B&Q) again built up in 5-6 thin coats.
The Plastikote stuff is very durable in my experience (far better than normal spray paint or Hammerite) and gives an almost powder coated looking
finish if applied well.

Can't comment on durability as I've only done about 150 miles since, but it looks top notch (apart from the bit where I missed a bit
sanding the metal - grrr!)
Much cheaper than Hammerite (I paid about 2.50 per can from local motor factors).

Sure is! that's what I use. As said matches the powdercoat nicely.

IMHO the roll bar is the most visable bit of your chassis / metalwork when the car is finished.
Get it finished properly and the car will look great, a poor finish can spoil an otherwise perfect car.
Saw a MEV Rocket last night which had been powder coated in silver / grey metallic. It looked lovely!

I've painted hammerite over red oxide and it wasn't very durable.
Hammerite has it's place, I seem to get better results spraying directly onto porous non-perpared surfaces.

I'm with the Plastikote boys, damn good stuff and gives a good finish. I've got a can of blue I've had for a while and I'm
using it for my engine block.

Whichever one you choose (I'm not a fan of hammerite myself) please for the love of everything that is painted SPRAY IT ON!!!!!!!!!!!

get a litre of celulose satin black from ebay and spray it it will be a much better job than a spray can

Stay away from hammerite, its well over priced! I used UPOL acid etch(expensive but had it for cheap) then used SPEREX FRAME PAINT TOUGH BLACK (IIRC)
in a satin finish. lasted over 2000 miles so far. also easier to blend in for touch ups. They advise to bake for a period of time but i used a hot air
gun.
