Bike Tests...?

Got a bit confused when looking into this one.
Can someone tell me in simpleton terms what the rules are regarding bikes and licences?

I understand that due to obtaining my car licence before 1st January 2001 I am entitled to ride a 50cc without doing a CBT and without the need for 'L' plates.

Being over 21 does that allow a 125cc?

After that I'm guessing a CBT and bike test are needed??

Anyone clear this up for me please?!

from what I gather...

Anyone can ride a 50cc moped thing on a normal car license

you need to sit cbt to ride a 125, and can then ride a 125 of up to 14.6bhp on a car license and l plates (car license gives provisional entitlement)

after that it depends on age, over 21 and you can do direct assessment and then ride anything you like, if youre younger theres an interim stage where youre restricted to 33bhp (restricted 400s and 600s and suchlike.)

to ride a 125 bike you must sit a CBT

don't worry you'd have to be unbelievably pathetic on one to fail, it cost about £70 and lasts 2 years before having to reset it if you don't go for your full licence test

buy a 125, their fantastic fun to ride

Hi. What's the smallest bike (and what would I need to ride one) that can go on a motorway.

I am sick of sitting going nowhere on the M25!!!!

L platers not allowed on motorways

also best getting something a bit bigger CC than 125 for that..My CG125 will do just under 70 indicated on clock, but only downhill and chin on tank and all appendages tucked right in and nothing flapping and is 'kin scarry on such a beast and I didn't hold it for long before realising how foolish a move it was
- going back up the hill , same posture I think I almost touched 40 MPH
Think a 250cc or bigger would be a lot happier at motorway speeds

My route to 2 wheels (locost way for non teenagers)
CBT - get a 125 , get some experience without killing yourself > theory > A2 test (33hp limit for 2 years) > whatever you fancy riding

Alternate method (more expensive and intense and could be a recipie for disaster)
CBT>Theory>DAS (ride anything you can afford - possibly a dangerous move if you are the type that would take on a traffic light drag race?)

I'm still at the pootling round on a CG125 stage and loving it- 100MPG £15 a year tax and filtering past the rush hour traffic so I am never late for work and can predict what time to set off - rather than set off at the same time each day and sometimes being 20 mins early or 1/2 hour late, for no reason
Not in a rush to do DAS or A2 licence depsite having a 360cc beast parked next to the CG, though I will probably get the theory cracked and out of the way before summer is out
dunno why I didn't do this years ago

Have fun and stay safe :-)

Regards
Rob
