New Car

Picked up my new car yesterday from Stafford.

Spent all day today cleaning and polishing the outside. Just the inside left to do next weekend.

Its a Leon FR+ TDI. Damned quick too! Quicker than the Mini mid-range without a doubt!

Got all the toys on plus a few nice little extras too. Much more practical and 55MPG too

As its a 180bhp diesel (290lbft torque!) its not exactly sluggish

Its got S3 Audi 312mm front discs on the same as the TT and a few others so plenty of stopping power too.

Its already stage 1 which is 180bhp and 290lbft. Stage 2 is 195bhp and 315lbft so not a lot more.

Its great fun to drive. Doesnt handle as well as the Cooper S, but its defo quicker.

Got a small list of jobs to do but nothing major. Most serious is getting the drivers door laquer sorted. Looks like the bottom section under the rubber strip has had a respray for some reason and the laquer wasnt done properly. Time to call a man who can!

I've got a Fabia, 173bhp and 311lb/ft and it holds that torque flat from 1800-2950rpm, in a 9n Polo chassis.........

Very competant to say the least, lots of "what the f**k is in THAT!" moments from drivers of "quick" petrols
Only problem is I'm a bit spoilt with all the cheap running/tax/insurance nd speed so how the hell do I sell it?? I did sell it in October and bought an S3 liked it for about 3 hours then sold it and bought the derv back!

Running back from Stafford yesterday and up to Bakewell for Luch then back via Newark (got stuck in traffic too) it averaged 53mpg

I wanted something fast but cheap to run, looks like I found it!

Hmmm... thats interesting... I have been toying with the idea of getting either an Ibiza cupra or a leon cupra R with a 1.8T petrol engine...

I dont think I would get that much MPG out of it...

But is the diesel engine really that good? How does it sound?

IMO, a good turbo-diesel engine is more fun to drive than a NA petrol. the rush of torque is very addictive

they are a bit more involed to drive, lots of gear changes etc, but this just makes it more fun.

all IMO

will

I have to agree, although pulling away at a roundabout is a little scary when you plant your foot...1..2..3..whoosh that surge when the turbo kicks in is brilliant

The 1.8T petrols average between 25 and 32mpg. They are very thirsty!

The 1.9 diesel is a great engine, VW made it for what must be getting on for 15 years or more and by the end of its run its pretty refined. Its been replaced by a smoother, quieter 2.0 now in the newer golfs and leons though.

Sounds pretty growly in the Leon, quite pleasent actually.

I wonder if anyone's ever thought of making a diesel 7? Surely if these engines are that good...
