question for the stainless welding and exhaust experts

my new (2nd hand) exhaust is a work of art

but, the manifold is for a vauxhall XE, and i need it to fit my XEV ecotec.

you can see the plates are a little different,

so, the question is, do i have the flange plate swapped over

OR

do i have the original one built up, with some extra bits of stainless welded on, and the holes redrilled?

i guess 907 is the man to ask on this one?

Adding bits on, it'll never be flat enough to get a proper seal.

Get a new flange onto it.
I'm a monkey of a welder and I could do that.
Incidentally, your manifold looks fair to me.

I used a CVH manifold on my Zetec by welding a Zetec manifold plate on top on the CVH one.

My welding isn't great, and this made it a lot easier to do.

is this to pack it out so it dont hit your box?
if so why dont you use long studs and 2 sets of gaskets and use the other flange as a packing peace.
if not i could weld it for you but im down here

Cant you just notch the manifold flange like they did on the old mini? The nut and washer clamped the manifold rather than bolted it down. Locost Version, and quicker too.

i was looking at it the other day, i don't think it will hit the box, the gearbox isn't bolted in right (which i forgot about) so it will move away from the exhaust by about 1/2" so no need to space anything

its just needing done because its a different cylinder head,

zil i know what you mean about adding bits on and it not being flat enough, joe welded a inlet manifold for me the toher week, and then sort of 'skimmed' it flat, so it should be possible to do on this too i'd have thought?

jamie, i think the ports on the manifold are a little bigger than they need to be, not sure why though, but thats part of why i'm wondering if extending bits on the original one might be a better idea.

Larger ports on the exhaust manifold is a good thing, a mismatch here is recommended in the ideal world level at the bottom, mismatch at the top of the port.

As you have both plates but it sounds like gearbox spacing may be an issue I would cut the old plate 3/8" around the outside of tubes so you gain a little then weld on to the new plate, not try and cut off flush.

Regards Mark

ah, good point, i have got the ecotec plate, its in mild steel, 6mm thick i think. might be 8mm. the original is stailness and 10mm thick. i'd prefer to stick with stainless i think.

btw, the gearbox spacing shouldn't be an issue now, so don't be thinking about that!
