Order of doing the legalities?

Another very far off worry but in what order are the legalities dealt with? Is it SVA, registration, MOT, TAX, or Registration, SVA, MOT, TAX?? How do you sort out the VIN plate with the registration people if the SVA is first?

When I did mine the order was:

Insurance (covers for build)
When looks like a car apply for VIN
Visit from local VRO inspector (Very helpful)
Stamp VIN Number and get signature that it's been done.
SVA
SVA retest
Apply for Registration and tax
Drive
Mot needed after 3 years after registration (for the select few!)

did you miss out the mot before you put it on the road, thats unless is was a car built with entirely new parts.
i was under the impression that you had to mot the car before sva.

Give your local DVA office a ring and find out who deals with kitcars and new reg. Get their tel number if poss (home address, maiden name, inside leg measurement the works) and ask them what they want from you to get your car on the road, then fill in as many of the forms as poss. Arrange a visit to get the vehicle checked and a VIN number issued as soon as the car looks like a car. The aim is to start early so that when you pass your SVA you can drive the car without having to wait for them to sort their act out. You do not in theory have to get a MOT on any kit built on a new chassis regarless of donor age. If it passes a SVA test for the first 3 years as it's date of reg. will be the date the reg number is issued. But I would advise booking and going for a MOT before the SVA to allow a quick shake down on the road and get brakes/emissions checked. Check out Totalkitcar.com as they have very good info, and take it from me they know more than 99% of DVLA staff do!

Not being very up with these things then, basically I get the car to the rolling chassis stage, call my local DVLA office and get an inspection organised and VIN applied, finish the car then can I drive it to the SVA test with no plates on it? If it passes the test then I can register it? What do I need from the SVA test to register it (some sort of form presumably)

i think the pass form is called a mac1 or something, ministers approval certificate. this is given to the local VRO to get reg and tax i think...

Did you know !!
I got a pack from the SVA man and it states, you can drive to test (we know that) and, you can drive to somewhere that is required to get something done to the car to allow meeting the test reqyuirments !
Like (I guess) a trip to Kwik Fit to get lights alligned,

Thats how I read it anyway

and if you do end up going to kwik fit, make sure you have an appointment!!!!

I think the retest is £30 according to the VOSA website www.vosa.gov.uk

And makes sure you you're insured to drive on the road. The companies will give you 30 days insurance on your VIN number, but as already said, only to booked appointments.
